Having no speed limit is safer

Didn't the number of road deaths plummet though when the speed limit on motorways was introduced?

In the 60's, where crossply tyres and drum brakes were the norm, perhaps...

The only way to only have safe drivers on the road is to restrict driving from large numbers of unsuitable people. It's not going to happen so I'm happen to be restricted, if it as a result it keeps people safer.

Jokester

Then it's not me who doesn't want to reduce road deaths...

So you would you be happy to restrict driving to those who were effectively proffesionally qualified, subject to annual retests etc?

Even if it meant you yourself couldn't drive?

Fine with me.

Even if it meant you yourself couldn't drive?

I would be able to drive, not necessarily because I'm already good enough (although given that I have done a lot of extra driver training, I am certainly above average), but I would happily ensure my qualification was kept up to date, especially if the roads were quieter and less restrictive because of the guaranteed driver quality.

Oh well. This debate is had over and over and we can all be content in the knowledge that there will never be derestricted roads in the UK. :)

Shame we can also be content with more people dying than necessary because of false road safety ideas... ;)

I doubt zero, but they could certainly be reduced by targeting the actual causes of deaths and injuries...

Exactly the

speed = death message is actually make roads unsafe.

Speed is a minority factor in crashes. just around a mere 3% of crashes are cuased by excessive speed. that includes excessive speed below the speedlimit but above safe for conditions.

It's nothing more than a cash crop and actually increases death. Because stupid people think if they stick to the speed limit there safe.

There's very few roads in the uk suitable for unrestricted speed. M6 toll as someone said would be suitable if maintained.

As for the northern terroitries, yep it should be unrestricted.

I live for speed having a 400bhp evo viii, BUT i dont think they should raise the speed limit above 70mph on our motorways.
You could argue that when the limits were set, you had austin maxis with **** brakes and now you have anti lock set ups on cars such as mine.
However if they raised the speed limit to 80 cars would do 90+ and even i think that is too fast on our roads.
I watched a prog on the autobahn and its got so much going on, it would cost taxpayers a fortune to keep it smooth.
We need to keep the roads smooth and safe imho
