HMRC loses 15m peoples bank details.

Strange, dad's just sent me a text saying his bank account has been emptied, and his account is seriously overdrawn. Someone, somewhere has got hold of something they shouldn't have and taken every penny he owns. He's in real trouble money wise now. :(

Will if your the only child in the house, they wont have your info as your out of the bracket for CB.

And i dont think anyone is dumb enough to start using the information right away.

I'm not the only child, and I didn't blame it on this specifically, but it's rather good timing!

The bank will give him the money back.

EDIT: Assuming he isn't pulling your leg.

Yeah, they'll sort it out for him. I had money taken from my account a few months back, took a while to sort out. Doubt he's pulling my leg, he's quite serious about money matters, and he's not the kind of person that would joke about it.

@ Markyp; I've been at work all day, and he knows I have been. He's at work currently, but he doesn't live with us, he lives further up the country.

I'd be interested to see the government would be liable for any fraud that's commited using the missing information. They're be no question, if a private company lost this info they'll disapear under a sea of lawyers.

That's a fair point! Hope it gets found soon as this affects me and my family, like it does a lot of other people. Very careless how it went missing.

I don't know if this point has been raised as I haven't read all the posts...but correct me if I am wrong!! The disc has been missing for a month or there abouts correct?? Now would the lucky recipient of the lost disc wait until it was all over the news or get as much money as possible before anyone could link the story with their money going missing?

What would a criminal do with my DNA?

I'd fear a lot more what they would do with my bank details.

We are talking about a system with a centralised database (or, to be more accurate, a number of linked databases) of as much information as possible on everyone.

So they'd have your bank details as well, along with a very large amount of information about you. More importantly, they would have what would have to be regarded as proof that they are you. The system is useless without that assumption. So they would be able to fake your identity far more thoroughly than the current simple ID frauds that the government is using to promote fear amongst people.

Its amazing how many people think this mishap is just another run of the mill govenment mess up.....

It's a lot more than that.

At the end of the day - its all very well saying a DNA record or a DNA fingerprint on its own isn't enough to bring a conviction, but if the jury is undecided, and I have a DNA profile (something that is very hard to magic out of thin air on an accused person) then they are easily swayed ( thanks to CSI etc) - most criminals would give their right arm just to have a DNA record of Mr J Bloggs so they could make an elaborate hoax and frame their worst enemy. It's happened before and it wil happen again.

A DNA database is a step in the wrong direction - it will only be a matter of time before the whole database gets into the wrong hands.

Again, how do you propose a criminal will use data, something intangible, to frame someone? They don't smear your DNA on a pen drive and upload it. Like I said before they absolutely cannot frame someone using a DNA profile.

Oh FFS! This is deteriorating by the day into a farce - someone at the Revenue's head needs to ******* roll for this shambles. Is there really no government department or goverment-controlled body in this country capable of doing its ******* job properly or at least competently? First the Home Office, now the Inland Revenue - who the hell next for Christ's sake  ...

Hardly on the same scale is it?

No, but it's symptomatic of the same level of rank incompetence ...

What, you mean other than Paul Gray, the HMRC chief who resigned in light of the missing discs?

No, but it's symptomatic of the same level of rank incompetence ...

In what way is it anything to do with HMRC's incompetence? In that case it looks like TNT have lost a few discs that don't even contain restricted material let alone anything marked as confidential or above. So why would HMRC have to take special precautions for the sending of them?

I want to know why doesn't the press shut up about it, all these news headlines is not doing the country any favours. Not only they are saying what is contained in the discs, they are also saying what it can be used for - identity theft and even pedophile can use it to track down children.....they want to give criminals a to do list or what?!

If they had kept this quiet, but the relevant people still look for it in the background then the disc might surface or even just lay on the floor of some Royal Mail depot somewhere and never to be seen or used. Now every idiot is looking for it. The press kept saying how the government has dropped the ball but they are just adding fuel to the flames dammit.

It's all very well in saying that but......

If they didn't have the data in the first place..... no one would be after it.

And at the end of the day, why did they have to transport the data ?

Surely if the other dept wanted it, they could have sent me a letter requesting it (or told me my personal details were getting requested), instead of asking for it without my knowledge......

Or maybe that's too difficult... actually asking me if It's OK to post my personal details and my children between a dozen different people without , me knowing / consenting or telling me about the precautions put in place or my permission.

What were they after the info for anyway ? I didn't fill the CB or tax credit forms in for it to be sent around every government body in the UK..... Where on the forms did it state that the info was going to be used around every UK civil service branch ?

Is it any wonder people born here want to leave this country to all the people flooding into it......

If i had known this was going to happen I would have never signed up for this mediocre £100 a month Child benefit & Tax credit. Now this muppet government has mislaid all my family information and hasn't a clue where it is. I spent the guts of 3 hours writing it all down and typing it into their stupid website, and they have the audacity to tell me it's nothing to panic about. I shred every bit of personal info I get and every website I log into has a different password. A fat lot of good that's going to do me now that all my other personal details have gone missing..

Now this muppet government has managed to loose my name, address, my wifes name, kids names, bank account details and NI number - what else could a criminal possibly gather from my bin ? And these new discs contain phone conversations recorded without knowledge I believe (with even more personal details) with numerous people in them. Since when was it Ok to record conversations and not inform the person that had phoned up ??????
All I can say is.

What were they thinking of.....

Sort yourself out..... and sort this mess out.
