you could just say that the guy that sold it to you told you it was a 1080P, and you'd like a refund as it is not what you wanted.
They just don't want to take it back because its a bit of hassle for them.

I think lying you were missold the TV or breaking it on purpose is extremely immoral. Accept you have made a mistake, should have checked the specs more carefully and not rushed into the purchase by checking the price online and move on. The fact that you can't afford to loose £250 should hammer it home even harder. Why should the retailer have to loose out because of your mistake?
