A friend's new tattoo

It's amazing how upset other people get over things like this, body modification is nothing new, people shave, people have hairstyles, women wear makup and pierce their ears, these are all accepted parts of our culture.

In other cultures large tattoos, lobe and lip stretching and implants under the skin are totally normal so am I expected to believe all of these people are attention seeking morons?

Some people like the cultural aspect and roots of this stuff and see it as an art form. Sure there will be some attention seeking tattoo wearers but they are far more likely to be the girl down the pub with something she picked out of the tattoo shop window.

but there are norms in society and everybody knows what they are - people shouldn't be surprised that they get treated differently if they do something radically out of the norm for standard society.

i still think people should be able to do whatever they want and that it shouldn't effect how people treat them, but i live in the real world and it does have an effect, and always will if you choose to go against the grain of society for whatever reason.

Its probably all ******** to be honest. I generally try to block out what people say if they have stupidly retarded facial hair and stretched earings, or moronic tatoos. I had to post in this thread however. That guy looks like a complete moron and to all you who come out with the obligitory 'But it makes him happy/he's an individual' comments I say this: I'm a ******* individual but I don't need to spend hours of my life letting someone draw pictures all over me, or spend years stretching my earholes just so I can show the whole world how of an individual (read: moron) I am.

As for him being your mate.. It looks as if you've just worshipped his online blog or something. Do you know his name? Surely if he started the first online casino there's going to be a lot of stuff about him on the net, especially considering he looks like an absolute fruitcake. If this is true of course..
Haha, I agree. good job this guy made his money on the internet, I can't see him being employed by any major company in a normal 9-5 job!

as it always does and always will and 'different' people will always be treated differently by the masses - human nature i'm afraid.

This is what I'm saying though. The people who are really 'out there', whether you like it or not, have a very big effect on fashion.

Most things that come into fashion begin as things done/worn by some people, most of whom are seen as weird or strange. Then people get used to the idea, it spreads, and becomes the norm.

Look at how many people have tunnels in their ears these days. When I started doing mine, around that time a lot of people had warmed to the idea and started too, and now there's even more. They're starting to become not weird.

true but its still hardly mainstream - i saw more punks in the 80's than people with tunnels in their ears now - in fact i think i only know a couple of people with them, and i work at a university.

They're getting very common down here now, which is my point. Give it a while and they'll be borderline mainstream, then they'll be old hat, and what's 'weird' then will then slide itself into the mainstream.

That's happening with heavily tattooed people too, although on a slower scale.

I've got two tattoos on one forearm, and one on the other and it's never hurt my career. I'm even going to a retail job next month and it won't hurt me there either. Times are a-changin' :)

his name is shannon larratt, if you're interested and want to read more(doubt it based on the tone of your post but hey, i'm a helpful sort).

penski didn't say he started it btw. he coded it iirc.

I've got two tattoos on one forearm, and one on the other ...

i very nearly got a manga pinup on the inside of my forearm last week. i blame you.

For the record, he's in his thirties, drives a Porsche (the camo one that I've posted several times before), created the world's first online casino and has heavy inkwork on hands and face...Do you really think he's going to be looking for a job in Blockbuster?

*n
LOL

HEY GUYS LOOK WHAT I JUST FOUND:

# His father, Richard, is a former Canadian wrestling champion, body builder, and computer professional (so Shannon grew up around computers). He is now an oil baron living on a boat running a sailing website.

# The day Shannon was born, his father went out and bought a Jaguar to celebrate

A JAGUAR, TO CELEBRATE? OIL BARON?? AND PENSKI RECKONS THIS GUY IS A LEDGE AND EARNT HIS MONEY? YEAH RIGHT

We all know people looking like that don't get good jobs, however I was willing to admit there may be exceptions. Nevertheless it looks like all those who thought he was an idiot were right:

# At about age sixteen, Shannon started tattooing himself, performing DIY scarification on himself and partners, as well as piercing himself (intially nipples and genitals) and beginning to stretch his ears.

* Shannon suffers from extreme depression and anxiety problems and has attempted suicide several times.
* "BME" stands for both "Body Modification Ezine" and "Be Me." The latter is because Shannon spent most of his life feeling like a "freak" and having a strong need to find other people like him.
* Shannon believes that body modification, including cutting (at least temporarily), can give people a layer of control over themselves that can be extremely beneficial psychologically.

# A split tongue (performed by a doctor).
# Partial genital bisection (self-done).
# Magnetic implant in his right hand.
R O F L

Fits just about every stereotype I could think of when I first saw pictures of him in this thread. He isn't actually your 'mate' is he? Why do you worship this guy so much?

http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Shannon_Larratt LoL

If you want to copy him and look like him fine, just don't apply for a job where I'm the interviewer.. lolz

Wonder why he felt like a freak?

And calling his daughter Nefarious... hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahaha. She's going to get raided for her lunch money at school.

I find the sleeve impressive but it's seems wasted on the arm, think it belongs on a wall where it would be appreciated more and by more people.

Maybe cos his parents named him Shannon:p loler

They may be "a-changin", unfortunetely in this case, usually retailers (at least the more professional mainstream ones) don't care what tattoos you have as long as they are not visible when you have your uniform on.
