New slimmer PS2 to hit the UK in 2008

If they are going to release the console AGAIN so they can squeeze another 5 years out of it, they should improve it a lot in both hardware and software. Maybe if they start more Wii kinda games with PSmotes and fun games then they have a chance. Perhaps you can sign into the PSNetwork thingy?
The hardware will remain a fixed spec. There's no need to improve it, there's the PS3 for high-graphics gaming. Perhaps better integration with PSN would be a good idea. If it could download and play games similar to Xbox live arcade games then it would be good in the casual games market.

Personally they should work on the PS3 and PS2 games and improve textures, graphics etc
Hmm, no point in going back to old PS2 games to improve their graphics. The type of people they are now aiming the PS2 at don't particularly care about graphics.

There not changing the physical size of the Slimline ps2. It's going to be exactly the same aesthetic but lighter and with the power supply inbuilt.

Josh

I suppose the article is ambiguous - "slimmer" could just mean lighter after all, but I think its possible to make it physically smaller also, even though its just a guess

I meant perhaps a hard disk? It would be a small laptop one for downloading demos, games or whatever perhaps a market place for PSX games?

Better intergration with the PSP/PS3? Maybe support (official) for streaming DivX/XviD, if they had this I know a few people would would buy them straight off (including myself) just for movie playback if it was well supported and did the job at the prices quoted.

I think it's great carrying on and all but I don't want Sony re-hashing the PStwo.

Generate new interest and at the same time increase profit.

As said, to the man in the street, there is no physical difference.

Its still a slimline PS2.
I think i was had by the headline, its just a rejiging of the power supply, so no a redesign or anything.

I may be mistaken but the PS2 is still selling very very well. Do you think it is not only hurting MS/Nintendo but their own sales of the PS3? Why spend so much on a console and its new expensive games when you can just buy a PSTwo with a HUGE library of games at much more reasonable prices. If the PS2 was 'end of lifed' would the PS3 sales go up do you think?

Through emulation which kills performance.

Emulation isn't the right term to use here. I like to think of it more as a different approach. The Wii's GPU is fixed function, admittedly, but that doesn't mean it's limited to non-shader style graphics. Besides, I've seen plenty of nice shader effects in MP3 and SMG which are both steady 60fps titles.

Whats the point of it exactly?
The PS3 continues to stagnate until people see a reason to buy one or it gets cheaper, and as such the PS2 remains a steady seller. Sony are cashing in on that to help profits while their main console continues to do nothing for them.

Makes sense to me, although it is a bit funny.

Wow, the PS2 just keeps going, doesn't it?

I wonder if it'll ever beat the NES/Famicon's record. :)
What record is that? The PS2 has long since outsold the NES.

As for the New PS2: Seems a little pointless. It must be another cost reduction rather than anything else. I mean, it is already small enough that any further reductions are not going to make a difference in terms of desirability etc. I bet Sony don't make a big fuss about it tho'. I mean, they really need to be putting all their effort into the PS3. Besides, by now the PS2 will sell itself.

As for the Wii vs Xbox1: The Xbox1 was more powerful than the GC. Not by a huge amount. The Wii is litterally an overclocked (by 50%) GC. This combined with over double the ram of the GC makes it more powerful/capable (in some ways) than the Xbox1. However, the end result is the Wii is not vastly better than the Xbox1.

Incorrect, the Gymecube was on part with the xbox, and the Wii is about twice as powerful as the gc.

The ArtX GPU can also do shaders

?????????

What are you pair on?

The xbox was several factors more powerfull than the gamecube in every department, from processing power, to memory size and through put, to rendering ability.

I'd go as far as to say the wii isnt even as powerfull as the first xbox.

It was was more powerfull by "a lot".

From what i've read, the Wii is generally the same hardware as the GC but clocked higher and generally refined to make it on par with the Xbox. Unfortunately i'm yet to see a game that equals some of the better Xbox graphics on the wii.
