what colour shirt and tie

Err I hope the :p was for the joke becasue I really can't see that whatso ever. I'm liking the no tie option but , but can help think , be hard to find a colour shirt which doesn't look to plain with out a tie

I'd go for one with stripes... Thomas Pink perhaps? The John Francombe range at TM Lewin is also pretty good.

Alernatively a really nice plain black shirt with a nice weave and fit would look good. See if you can get herringbone pattern or something like that for added interest.

Black shirt with tie to match to suit.

Job done :)

That has to be the worst fashion advice I have ever seen in my entire life. No exaggeration. Jesus. A black shirt will never work unless you are barstaff.

If you are not confident about what look you want to achieve it is best to keep it classic but sharp looking. A high quality crisp white cotton shirt with a solid coloured tie is usually a safe option. The colour of the tie is down to you but with a light grey suit, I personally would opt for a red or a yellow.

If you are feeling like being bold, go for a butcher striped shirt in a bold colour, maybe red and either a solid or a spotted tie in a darker colour. I prefer a classic cut collar but if you prefer a larger knot, a cutaway collar will be better suited and can look quite smart. French cuffs are a must.

When shopping for a shirt, go for quality. You want 2 fold 100s cotton, double front gusset, split yoke, mother of pearl buttons (do not settle for plastic), no front pockets. If you are getting s striped shirt make sure the front plackett, shoulders, chevrons etc... are all well matched as there is nothign worse than a haphazardly stitched striped shirt.

I thoroughly recomment Smyth & Gibson Shirtmakers. Having tried most bespoke shirtmakers I have been thoroughly impressed by the quality of their shirts and the excellent customer service. Most of my shirts now come from them. They have just started selling on the web and you can have a looksie here - www.smythandgibson.com
Considering their quality exceeds that of some of the Jermyn Street and Saville Row shirtmakers who charge upwards of £160-250 per shirt, they are very reasonably priced. The shirts also come with a 20 year guarantee.

God, I love shirts.

Wow thanks for the very imformative post! I'll try the black shirt option may as well since I have one at home. I think a white shirt with a pastal coloured yellow tie may look good. Although I really amliking the no tie option. What could ou recommend then ?? A light couloured pink shirt or yellow shirt ??

For added effect, wear some cufflinks that match your time piece with the white shirt. :) Preferably silver, gold jewelry makes people think of football managers :p

Depends how much of a tan you've got tbh though.

Yeah I looked at light pink , but what sort of tie ?? I don't have a perma tan :)

I ahve some nice silver cufflinks from tiffneys so thats not a problem ;)

EDIT or was that the suggestion for without a tie ?!?

And hair colour. Also you personality can make a difference IMO, some peeps can make it look great just with confidence.

I was the manager of a suit shop for 4 years, and I tried to make as many pink converts as possible :p

So think a pale pink shirt open neck could work??

By the way I really do appircate all your suggestions they are a great help for when I go into town on saturday.

thanks again

For sure, I really like the open neck look, some folks thinks it all a bit scruffy, but I find it hard to think anybody looks scruffy in a decent suit :)

Having it open neck does mean that you will have to get a very nice shirt though, as the buttons / inside collar will be visible. And be careful not to get too big a cutaway collar, as these can look a bit odd open.

oh and double cuff = win. Have an inch poking out from your sleeve. Just please no novelty links. I really like these ones:

But of course it's all about preference.

Well the suit I have is I can see in town. Its nothing special just a autograph from M&S very nice mind. So think I will try there first and see what I can match up with it. I know some people will moan , but I will only wear suits maybe 5-6 times a year. So don't really want to be paying much more then £50 for a shirt or shirt and tie.

I'll post back with what I get. I think its either going to be a pale pink shirtopen neck or white shirt with a plae yellow tie , because I can really see them to working.

However if anyone else suggests anything i'm still open to more suggestions:)

Stay at home, spend the money on some really nice beers.

HA ha I would if I could but , I'm "expected" to attend the works party. Should be quite good fun to be fair. At york race course which is quite a nice venue. Its just a certain few people who will be attending
