Do they exist?

Simple question, I thought I saw one the other day but im sure it was my eyes playing tricks on me.

If not, has there been any talk of a release of such a model.
Thanks
Nick

They will exist eventually. Samsung have announced them but they'll be focussing production on the higher capacity, higher margin versions to begin with.

So what is the fastest hard drive out at the moment.

How much faster will the samsung spinpoint F1's with 32mbcache be than the ones with 16mb cache?

Thanks

Define fastest....

The Seagate Cheetah 15K5 is out and out the fastest you can get but it's a SAS drive so needs a dedicated controller etc.

Looking more mainstream then the 74Gb or 150Gb WD Raptors still have the best seek times available but the price per Gb and noise level aren't as good as the 7200rpm drives. Of them probably the 750Gb Samsung F1 is the quickest in terms of average sustained transfer - faster than the Raptors but with a slower seek time.

There will be very little difference in performance between the 16Mb & 32Mb cache versions of the F1.

@rpstewart, you seem to know a lot about harddrives, do you perhaps know if the 500GB and 750GB versions of the F1 have 250GB platters or the 334GB platters of the 1TB drive but short-stroked?

From what I've heard all the F1s use the 334Gb platter so the 750s should be short stroked. I do, however, reserve the right to be proved wrong....

The 500s should be a 2 platter/3 head design with the 334Gb platters.

Yeah, I have been reading a lot of previews and news sites and some do indedd mention that all drives use the same 334GB platters but not one site confirms that they are short-stroked.

If they are the 750GB drive should have an even faster average speed than the 1TB drive.
