A £40000 V6 Metro?

I’m not sure I would be seen driving that if somebody paid me 40K actually.

are you nutz??? have you ever seen one of them go? were you aware of there existance before this thread......

these were and still are giant slaying cars, and ive give my left nad just to drive one for the day!

I went to a rally about 5 years ago in North Yorkshire, Ripon area i think.

There was evos, scoobs and typical other sorts of rally machines I was more interested in the Metro 6r4 i spotted my mate though i was mental to be looking at skanky old metro !

I think the 6r4 won the rally that day and a madly preped saxo came 3rd I think, I'm pretty sure the saxo was putting out some serious power though.

The metro sounded mint at full chant !

As I recall it didn't win anything in group B

Didn't really get much of a chance though...

At its launch in 1985, Rover announced that it would complete the necessary number of cars required for homologation by November of that year. This was undertaken at the group's large manufacturing facility at Longbridge. The car was to participate in the Lombard RAC rally in November 1985, and an example, driven by works driver Tony Pond, finished a highly respectable third, behind two Lancia Delta S4's.

This good start was unfortunately not repeated, and although a 6R4 was entered in rallies at Monte Carlo, Sweden, Portugal and Corsica during the 1986 season, none of the Metros managed to complete a course. The majority of these problems were related to the V6 powerplant which suffered teething issues. Indeed, since that time there has been a lot of talk of the engines have being underdeveloped before being entered into competition. Halfway during the 1986 season, Group B was banned (following a series of fatal crashes in which both competitors and spectators lost their lives).

you could pick up a second hand M3 and mod the crap out of it for £40k

And it's a nans car with a big engine, a fugly bodykit and a zorst...
Like getting a nova and modding it, at the end of the day, even if its fast its still a nova.

Astonishing ignorance of provenance...

Indeed. I really can't understand those who think it's just a kevved up Metro with a big engine. IIRC, the only part it shares with a normal Metro is the windscreen. Every single other part is specially made for rallying. It's a proper bespoke (if that's the right word) group B rally homologation car.

It sounded awesome :D

The people who think it's a kevved up Metro are simply ignorant of the facts my friend.

As I am sure you know it was a bespoke design from Patrick Head at Williams no less for the purposes of winning the Group B Rally Championships. It may well have failed, it may have well been poorly concieved as turbo power grew, but it is a proper competition car with a place in history and to those who actually watched it compete, as I did on several occasions, will hold a place in memory if for nothing more than the noise it made through a forest in Grizedale or Kielder, in the days when the RAC Rally was special.
