*****THE OFFICIAL***** MASS EFFECT THREAD

I'm going for insanity too after finishing it on Normal. Normal was a walk in the park with the Spectre X weapons. Hopefully it'll be more challenging.

well started playing it yesterday and am loving every minute of it.

I have already clocked up 8 hours and have only just left the citidel. It certainly is a cinematic treat and the story seems to be going along nicely.

This normally isn't a style of game that I enjoy but it has me hooked so far.

I am guessing this is going to be a 40+ hour game at the rate I am playing it.

I can see why it's not quite perfect 10/10 - the combat is pretty dire. You don't really 'feel' it. It's not fluid enough to duck and weave in and out of combat, with the cover system being horribly clunky. You lose accuracy in seconds even with full gun mastery (full assault rifle talents here), while your enemies can get you spot on everytime. Nearly every fight I just spam fire, and pray it's enough to get them before they wipe the three of us out. The slow frames per second during fights do not help much, neither does the ridiculous teammate AI - I have yet to be in a fight against more than 2 enemies where I'm not the sole survivor.

A good example of flawed combat is the first fight with the matriarch benezia or whatever her name is. The commandos come, and most of the time you can't even get your shots and cover done well - there really isn't a feeling of controlling the situation even when you are winning! The vast majority of difficult fights are done through sheer trial and error with me, and really, that's just not the way to go in good games. It just falls so short of other games with similair combat, such as Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The combat really lets what is otherwise a great game down. It's a 7/10 from me.

edit: actually make that 5/10. There's so many things wrong with Mass Effect that really it just cannot justify the build-up to the game's release. Dying immediately after a cutscene because a boss uses paralysis alongside troops shooting your body on floor without any control whatsoever of the situation, forcing you to actually drop the 10+ hours game save and start again from the beginning: oh deary me. This game stinks right now.

This is an RPG not an FPS :p

Neither are those two games I've mentioned are FPS's, I was merely pointing out how the cover systems and combat in those two games are more fluid and easier to work with. No amount of statistics and numbers in an RPG like Mass Effect will remove the glaring flaws in the game. It's a rubbish game, and well below Bioware's standards in terms of gameplay.

By all means go in Mass Effect Defense Force Mode, at least the PS3 owners are having a break right now. ;)

I was really enjoying it up until the point I chose to fight the biotic terrorists holding a hostage.
I can occasionally get to the second part of the fight but then get my arse handed to me everytime.
Gonna give it another go, but if I can't do it then I'll be getting shot of it, can't be arsed to play through 10 hours of gameplay for no good reason tbh :(

lukly mine had saved just before , id be well peed if it hadnt as ive done the same bit over ad over lol.

I only had to go back about 10mins but it still ruined the moment a bit considering where it was in the game.
Seems a daft error too.

To be honest it sounds like you're not playing the game right, the only people ive had real difficulty on so far with a soldier is getting wrex's armor(right after i left the citadel for the first time on hardcore). Its true the assault rifle does lose accuracy fast but crouching makes a hell of a difference and with overkill active you can spam to your hearts content as im still accurate with that even with a gun with an accuracy rating of 1. Im not sure about the rest of the team but it would also help if you set them to actively use techs/biotics in the options menu as that can help a lot and i find i can rarely be bothered to sort them out the whole time

The teammate ai can be pretty silly but if you send them to a place with cover with enough room for both of them they can generally take care of themselves

I think you're just rubbish mate

In defense to KNiVES (which I don't do often! :p), I can see what he's saying.

Without spoilers, the bit where you confront Matriach Benezia was just ridiculous, especially if your skills aren't high enough. I spent almost a full day on that to be confronted with the same thing: Start, go through door, endure cut-scene (and can't skip it!!), cover behind box, enemy use LIFT power up to lift boxes and destroy me. It was ridiculous.

In the end I just went and did some side missions for several hours to boost up skills, find more gear, sell it and buy better armour etc, which I understand is probably the 'better' way of doing it, but for someone who wants to get stuck into the main quest it would be tedious, boring, repetitive and just ruin the game.

Having said that, and in total OFFENSIVE to KNiVES ( ;) ), if you hadn't saved for 10 hours then, er, sucks to be you!!

One huge tip, use shotguns!

They seem to be far too powerful, even from a distance if you use the correct ammo type for your target you'll kill in one or two hits.

As for Benezia, she was easy :p

So in effect the game has enemies at a specific level, forcing you to also be at a specific level to be able to take them down. It seems some people are complaining about it a little. It's funny how people were complaining about Oblivion and the fact that the enemies were always scaled to your level. I guess game designers really can't win ;)

On my second playthrough, I went through most of the game with the Spectre Sniper rifle. OMG that thing has some serious power with the right ammo combo  I also saw an enemy I hadn't seen when I first went through the game - a Geth Prime. Think I found him on Virmire. He was a huge robotic geth who got the better of Kaiden a good few times.

I've been listening to the OST of the game over the past few days, and got a lot of tracks in my head now, including the fabulous track played in the end credits. I've still got to read the novel though, forgot all about it over the weekend.
