Fudzilla have been reporting that NVidia have quickly been rethinking their cooling design for the 8800GT and have came to the solution of increasing the diameter of the fan by 10mm and the default RPM has been dropped considerably! However this is not the most astounding change! AT Max speeds the fan is only around 100rpm higher than the originals default fan speed

THis has been tested at expertview who basically say, launch that baby on full speed and it shift loads of air and stay perfectly quiet! In the charts you will see this much lower fan speed even decreases temps a further 2degrees. Remember the chart shows both cards first on their default speeds (auto fan speed old cooler/auto fan speed new cooler) and also their max speeds (4338.7rpm old cooler vs 1664.61rpm new cooler)! The results themselves make very good reading :)

It was interesting until i saw 2 degrees cooler and furthermore if it was better and quieter then why wasn't it released like this in the first place.

Are you trying to tell me 2degrees cooler on max fan settings is not good enough? I mean when the original cooler is on max speeds does it not do a very good job but is ungodly loud? I thought a load temp of 68degrees on max speed with no noise would be a good thing!

I dont know why they didnt do it to be fair but then you look at cooler designs like the 2900xt etc and wonder why they didnt do the same :p

I don't want a bigger cooler on the GT, performs great and gives more room for the pci slot below to be used if needed!

But this new cooler is still slim so all is good :D

Yeah im quite impressed by the simple 10mm increase and how it effects things so much! Seriously looking back on some of the graphics cards of recent times and thinking about why they never did that in the first place now! But then again how can you tell what cooler your gonna get with your card :( lol

Yep, my Zotac 8800GT AMP has the larger fan already. Still occasionally artifacts with green fuzz tho :P Although that hasn't happened for a couple of days now...

Cool. once BFG has all these new coolers I will return mine for the updated version. mine artifacts very occasionally, and its kinda annoying, because I get green dots on the screen, and I have to reboot.

Have you tried rasing the fan speed to 40%?

How do we know how much quiter it is though i would imagine at full whack it is probably the same noise level as say 60% on old fan.

I think the RPM gives that away to be honest! It will only be slightly faster than the original cooler at stock so I am assuming not really loud as all

So where does that leave current old cooler owners? Tough I suppose.

They aint old coolers, nothing to do with Nvidia.

Updated: According to our sources Nvidia hasn't changed the reference cooling and doesn't even plan to do so. Our sources also claim that Expreview.com just managed to get their hands on Leadtek's own 8800GT design which uses an improved cooler, similar to those we saw on XFX cards a while back.
