£16k to spend, what am i buying

anyway in the current system cars over 2.0 litres are at 30% of the current open market selling price...
requirements as follows.

Must be no more than 7 years old - No problem
Must be faster than my e39 530i sport - Easy
Must have some level of practicality - 2 seats ok but need to be able to carry a normal amount of luggage from time to time - 4 seats, decent boot
Must be able to get a well looked after lowish mileage example for no more than £16k sterling - Yep, if you are quick and keep an eye out on the usual places.

other suggestions welcome...

Bit like saying that if you got the 350Z youd wish you got the Porsche 911, same price differential :)

hehe this is true, but (I assume, with limited thinking about it) the SL is the CL with a drop-top, so i'd be wishing i could have got a SL. But yes I see what you mean, it's the same with everything, buy a 3 bed semi and i'll wish i could have got a 4 bed detached!

Agh and now i've clicked on the Monaro links...damn! How many miles would a tank get you in one of those? As long as I can get from London to brum without stopping I don't give a crap hehe

I think i would be quite happy in the CL, even when seeing an SL i would know that my car cost me approximately half that of the SL, yet is pretty much the same. I'd love an SL but due to their prices you cant compare them, there is always something better if you want to double your budget.

Ok sold! I want a CL again hehe. What model is yours Jez? I forget but S rings a (possibly made-up) bell. On a selfish note, is the CL as expensive (very expensive) to run as I have heard? 350Z would be lots cheaper to keep alive i'd have thought.

EDIT: Completely different cars ofcourse I suppose, 25 tonne CL against 1.5 tonne (or whatever it is) 350Z!

Not totally awful but not cheap, they are generally reliable (done nearly 8k in mine now, nothing has gone wrong, and looking back through the SH the only thing to have ever been replaced other than service items are the cat converters and exhaust system - its done 90k now)

Servicing can vary between £300 and £1500 depending on what you want doing, with an interval of around 10k miles.
Tyres for the 19" rim models (as above) are around £700 for a set and will last about 10k miles.
Parts are a lot from mercedes, but are available elsewhere cheaper.
Fuel mileage for the 5.0 will be between 18 and 25 average depending on how you drive it.

Mines an S430 (saloon) which is the smaller 4.3L model.

Jez has it spot on.

I've had my CL500 for two years now and covered 25,000 miles and it has been pretty reliable. I've had two problems that were not routine. The cats went (common problem at around 60-70K miles) which resulted in a £1,000 job as you have to replace both. The second issue was with a ball joint which is £50 for the part I'm told (it's in being done now), although a MBUK dealer would inssit on changing the whole trunion ('scuse spelling) which is a £320 part.

I've had it serviced twice by an independent with a major service costing me £600 (there's a lot of spark plugs to change!) and a minor one costing £350. I get 21mpg on my commute of 25 miles mostly on the M25 at a crawl. On a long run I get close to 24mpg and around town.... well I just don't think about it. Needs to run on SUL and the tank holds about 70 litres so costs a bit to fill up.

I don't think it will be any quicker than your 530 until you get up to three figure speeds. Out of the factory it came with 306bhp but it has more weight to shift than the BMW. If your E39 is as good to drive as my old 330Ci was then you won't find the CL500 a better car dynamically. What you will find, however, is that it is a much better cruiser. The suspension is much more compliant and it'll be loaded with toys. And you can drive around knowing that someone, somewhere once probably paid upwards of €100K for it.

It doesn't fit through a tax loophole either, they class it as a 2.6 or something :(

Niall - the new VRT system ONLY applies to NEW cars as far as I know.

I know road tax will be going up by 11% for me though - €1230 :(
out of interest, do you have a ahalf decent public transport system to back up the outrageous motoring costs?
