This may be a daft question but I thought I would ask anyway,
I have 2x 150GB raptors running a dual boot system XP 32bit and Vista 64bit
My question is why do the raptors run silent in XP but in vista sound like a jet engine .
I'm not overly bothered as I never really use vista its way to buggy I only got it to take advantage of my 4gig of ram and directx 10 but I just thought I would ask as I thought it to be a bit strange.

It's irrelevant which os you use, hardware is hardware... and Vista really isn't as buggy as people think
edit: just realised i read the post completely wrong, as the person below had mentionned Its probably due to the services in Vista accessing the drive constantly, they can quite easily be turned off however. Also stop the drive being accessed as much by turning off the indexing

Vista will be superfetching as microsoft like to call it. That is to say moving commonly used programs into the ram.

Indexing service will also be thrashing hard drive.

and a few other bits and bobs.

Its all just to make your computer faster. however if your willing to sacrifice this you can disable all these fetures. theres a post about it on these forums in fact. cba to find it but i suspect searching "vista thrashing" will probably show it up :)

I see thanks guys but as I said im not bothered I never use vista due to all my games and programs crashing on it ,shame though it so nice to use and it would be nice to be able to play more than 10 minutes of directx 10 powered crysis but im sure it will get sorted over time.

I wonder what the problems you're having with vista are? try updating drivers and vista itself because there are millions of people using vista without problems.. myself included

The indexing service is considered to be a legacy application on Vista and is disabled by default.
No it isn't! Any time you create and format a new partition indexing is turned on for that drive, any time you search Vista encourages you to turn indexing back on. Doesn't sound like a legacy application to me.

Its ON by default and its same PIA as XP, I kill it in services and uncheck the Box in my HDD Properties and Apply Attributes to Folders and Sub Folders.

Makes my Raptor X's tamer and my searches for my Pr0n take a few seconds longer.

I played crysis for 3 hours straight today on vista 64 and had no problems. Dunno what your problem must be, driver issue? None of my games have crashed on vista, neither have my programs.
