8800GTS 512MB Ramblings Thread

A brand new launch

Nvidia will launch Geforce 8800GTS 512MB card by midday Central European time on December 11. Nvidia simply likes to launch stuff on Tuesday as it gives the PR bosses some time to recover from the weekend.

The new card is based on G92 chip with eight clusters enabled and 128 Shader units. The reference card works at 650MHz core, 1650MHz Shader clock and 1940MHz DDR3 memory clock.

The card comes with dual slot cooler and it is much quieter than the single slot G92 based cards, it will end up a bit faster than G92 based 8800 GT but this will heavily depend on the resolution.

We've seen some listed for around €330 which sounds quite attractive, but it will also be interesting to see how this card is doing versus G92 based 8800GT at 700MHz clock. We will be ready to tell you more about the performance tomorrow.

Taken from Fudzilla, looks like it might be tomorrow!

At this stage of the year it isn't worth upgrading.

I could up grade to a GTX or a GTS today, but there is no need.

If you can cope if what you have at the moment - what is waiting 2-3 months more for a beast that is the 9800 gtx :)

A Pair of 3870s do look tempting though ;)

well big places are charging £199 ish so im sure ocuk will also charge this. shame gibbo aint just come and posted in here which day and time the nda ends, pretty disappointing:(

Not on a bloody X850XT PE :p

What are the main differences between the G92 GTS and G80 GTX? Just not clocks I presume?

ps3ud0

The main and relevant difference for you at your resolution is the higher memory and bandwidth available from the GTX, especially if you use some AA/AF.

The early benchmarks we've all seen for the new GTS show it the same, just behind or even outperforming the GTX, but that's without AA/AF.

The GTX is a great card, and hasn't become pants overnight!

Unless the GTS is signifcantly cheaper than the OCUK GTX, then I would still be tempted by the GTX.

People keep saying it won't be worth as much as a new GTS come spring next year, but I don't necessarily buy that.

The used price of GPU's is usually driven down by something quicker being available on the market, but as the GTX will still be as quick, if not quicker in some situations, as the GTS, why would that happen?

Yeah, so the GTS is rumoured to run cooler than a GTX, so what? As long as it operates flawlessly at whatever temp, why does it matter?

Cheers Tooks,

Why Im swaying to the GTX - with that high res my Opty 165 setup shouldnt matter as much...

Will wait for the GTS pricing to hit before I make my mind up - cant see a £240 GTX dropping that much when the 9800GTX comes out and will be the same ballpark as a £210 GTS in reality - who wouldnt pay £30 more for a GTX over a GTS second-hand...

EDIT: Bugger just went to order and the price has gone back up to £260 :(...

Hi there

Unfortunately I have a lot of work to do and can't always spend my time on the forums.

The product launch is not today, its tomorrow midday.

Any product details and pricing I cannot release due to NDA reasons.

hmm, i phoned a competitor and they said they would be on their site later today.

maybe they are unaware.

Yeah its odd that, the release date is the 11th, but thats tomorrow which is Tuesday, but Nvidia always release on a Monday, so i guess its a wait and see.

Im expecting them to be up today though seen as its always been Mondays they release.

Maybe because by the time Nvidia moan at them to take it down because it's still under NDA the extra day will have passed and the NDA is not applicable.

Cheers Tooks,

Maybe an indication of where the GTS is going to be priced then? Wouldn't do to have a faster card for the same price as a GTS now would it?!

if it is 200 then thats okay and i might bag one.seeing as gt is near that anyway at mo cant really complain at 200.if they are silly priced i guess its going to be spent on a good cpu and wait till new ranges arrive.
