Tried for ages tonight Lapping my CPU for that added bling i;ve seen around these forums

Lapped using wet 'n' dry sandpaper from 400 grit to 2500 grit and then polished but it just doesnt seem shiny ... best i can get is a minor reflection.

Someone let me in on the secrets !

Although it has knocked 4c off my load temps :p

It's not supposed to be shiny, it's supposed to be flat. That's all that's important. If you wanted it shiny the treatment process is called buffing or polishing, not lapping.

What CPU cooler are you using? Is it lapped as well?

a perfect mirror finish isnt realy needed considering the thermal paste is ment to compensate for the little imperfections that cause the surface to be less than a perfect mirror, the point of lapping is as BillytheImpaler says, its to create a flat serface for better heat transfer, unlike some of intel cpus which are dipped in the center slightly, causing either reduced contact with the heatsink, or thicker thermal paste.

First off: nobody will notice the 'bling' as it will be underneath a heatsink/waterblock and nobody will ever see it.

Secondly: I'm not sure from your post, but it sounds like you went straight from 400grit to 2500grit. Which is somewhat akin to flattening out the Himalayan Mountains using a toothpick: i.e. it will work, but will take a while.

Use 400, 800, 1200, 2400 and it should be fine for that 'bling' but 800 should be fine as an upper limit.

i used everything between 400 to 2500

400 600 800 1000 1200 1500 2000 2500

its definatly flat :P

just wonder why its not even remotely shiny... sort of greyish colored now (altough still copper)

You mean like mine?

Shiny AND flat.

As stated you don't NEED it shiny as apparently the differences between shiny and dull are negligable. I however like to do a proper job in that if its dull it still has scratches (however minute they may be) - shiny and the scratches are not there, therfore giving a bigger surface area of contact in which to transfer heat.

Oh and it looks nice too :D

Try using 2000 and 2500 again but use it DRY (just make sure you cover the opening of the IHS to prevent any dust fron getting inside).

You don't want it shiny. If you're using polish on it then you're screwing the entire purpose of lapping to get better thermal contact by sticking a layer of crap back on top of the chip!

Webbo if you got there by sanding alone I'm impressed but I very much doubt that.

what sort of polish? Surely using metal polish would really ruin the TIM being put on? Arn't they ment to be clean when applyign it. Which id imagine includes no polish. They say dont clean with any oil based cleaning products etc. Isn't polish oil based?

Reviews on the net have shown people to use Brasso to polish the CPU and then Isopropyl alcohol to clean it off. (Don't know much about Brasso. whether it is an oil based product or not)
