Virgin Media re-thinks throttling policy

I don't think anyone on the 20mb package has any reason to complain. I'm definitely a heavy downloader, I average around 80-140gb in/out GB a month (blame HD media).
But I don't really get hit by the throttles because I'm gaming in those hours and I really appreciate that other people in my area can't **** my pings up :)

i compleatly agree, without these limits in place, high bandwidth ppl will effect others in the same area during prime time. some ISPs fair useage policy would just kick you from using their service, at least virgin lets you continue, just at a reduced speed.

With this throttling, if i get cut to the 5 meg speeds you get on 20 meg can i still download etc, for example i went over it at 7pm just now so does this mean i can still download etc at the 5 meg speeds and i will return to full speed at 11pm.

my god @ all the people moaning, tbh its a pretty fair policy so stop the whining. So you cant download all those tv shows/movies in PEAK hours yes thats right PEAK hours. I bet you all moan when your bandwidth is slow, you know why? Cos of other people all downloading in PEAAK!! hours.

Its a small time frame, do it before or after and live with it. Still no monthly limit as I understand it which is far better than most ISPs now adays.

I got no problems with VM system i much prefer this than a bog standard cap, my question was just asking if i can continue using my connection when its been reduced.

Why should the customer make allowances for VM's current network not being able to cope with the services they offer?

"Peak hours" is a lame and backwards concept when it comes to the internet. Don't know why you're so eager to accept it.

This is great for me as I don't get in from work until 9:30-10:00 ish so now I can download right away and will never get capped. :)

Maybe he believes it doesnt exist and its a big conspiracy. Im sure most people in this imaginary time want to use the net to browse/game so to me it makes sense. If your not happy with it then bugger off some where else and use a diff ISP? But good luck cos other than Bethere you aint going to get anything better.

Because problems associated with the busiest times wouldn't exist if VM weren't selling services that are apparently outside of their means.

so you are saying VM should spend billions to upgrade the system to a point where customers can download at max speed non stop throughout the day without effecting others connection?

thats just stupid, for VM to do that they would have to raise the price of all services by 10x to cover the costs. And its not just VM, the whole internet simply can not support the ever increasing bandwidth usages, some things are just beyond VMs controll.

in a perfect world there would be no need to slow customers connections if they download too much, but this isnt a perfect world and there WILL be problems/limits with all isps. So if you dont like what VM is doing, simply leave them, and go find another ISP taht you think is better.

Frankly the sooner the whinging bunch put their money where their collective mouths are and leave VM the better as far as I'm concerned..

Anyone hitting the cap on a regular basis during the evening hours is impacting the network and them switching to whatever Ub3r l337 service they will use next can only mean good news for my ping times and download speeds...

Good on VM I say, the sooner the illegal P2P stuff is clamped down on the better. Of course I appreciate everyone here actualy only downloads 2 or 3 different linux distros every night to hit the cap on a regular basis, what else could it be... Honest...

Unfortunatly it's people that take the wee consistantly that saw the introduction of fair use policies by the ISPs and will eventually see a two tier system where the low cost subscriptions that potentialy cause problems and not make profit will get more and more restricted whilst a premium will be charged for uncapped high performance services. Perhaps it's be better that way in the end if it discourages the rampant leaching going on at the moment.

Maybe to satisfy the "get **** I paid for, I demand a fibre link all of my own for £10 per month" brigade we should go back to something like a flat rate charge for upto 5Gb a month and then £5 per GB per month over that...

and they work perfectly fine for me now that they are virgin medias lines.
I meant that there weren't any speed reductions when they were with blueyonder, a short time ago, in response to you saying it'd cost billions and mean 10x price increases to get that situation.

I'm happy with VM as an ISP and don't actually fall foul of the speed reduction that often. I just think it's a backwards policy that flies in the face of what broadband internet is about.

Man A: A speed reduction policy for making full use of your connection is lame.
Man B: Don't be a **** and use a lot of bandwidth then. You shouldn't be using your 2Mb/4Mb/20Mb connection that way because the network can't cope.
..Virgin Media: Hey, dudes! Just swinging by to say that we'll be launching 50 frickin' Mb next year. Woohoo! Check it!

Is it actually only targeting the top 3%, or is that just the spiel that VM are quoting - the status quo was only supposed to affect the top few percent, but everyone gets throttled once you go over the limit...
From their website it says top 3% of each tier. I think they have 'estimated' it would affect that amount of users.
