Whatever happened to the British "Gentleman"?

He is dead. Few exist today and those that do are dead inside. The efforts of a gentleman are no longer appreciated in society today.

Such a shame.

Such efforts do seem to be looked down upon for some strange reason.

While out today, I tipped my hat and wished the shop assistant a "Merry Christmas" - She looked at me like i'd ran in her house on christmas day morning and set it on fire.

you're a right ******* weirdo mate :D (this is a joke, do not take seriously)

i know what you mean though, you get that a lot especially from those under 30s, and if you're young you get it from those over 50 or so (mainly because they are used to the special brew swilling louts that infest our public places)

For some reason, people view it as pretentious and an attempt to assert yourself as better than them. Maybe our resident expert psycho analyst Mr. Cleanbluesky can shed some light?

Show you a gentleman you say? Show me a lady first! Not many of those about these days.
Ne'er a truer word spoken, sir. The lady is as dead as the gentleman in the younger generations.

The lady is as dead as the gentleman in the younger generations.

Does appear to be unfortunately true.

I only hope to be able to instill some of these virtues into my children, although I fear they would be mocked in their younger years for showing such respect and overall good form.

Well, there's a bit of a balance.

In order to be a lady, must I always be in a dress and simper, looking at men with a misty-eyed admiration?

I consider myself very much a lady, but not in the traditional sense..

Do you like kittens? :D

Disagree.
Depends on your social circles, I know for a fact the lady is very much alive.

Send her up to Peninsula Square will you old boy?

That's the trouble, I originate from a less respectable area and as such my social circles aren't as 'proper' as some, hence why I rarely have the pleasure of meeting genuine ladies and gentlemen.

For us young common folk, the sight of a lady from our generation is a once in a blue moon occasion nowadays.

Kinda know what you mean. A lot of my mates are from private schools and the difference in social upbringing is quite marked. On the other hand, a lot of them seem to have just developed a sense of arrogance and forgotten the manners that they were taught :(

Meh, like-minded people generally gravitate towards each other.

Sadly that means I keep company with lots of 40-somethings due to my preferred style of dance and my apparent wise-beyond-my-years-ness. I also seem to charm the socks off 60-something men too, I was called a 'cherub' by one not too long ago!

And just need to add a note, as I was once of the opinion that people grow boring as they get older, this is certainly untrue. A lot of people get set in their ways but some of the most raucous conversation I've had, had been with my swing jive classmates, a true riot! Well beyond what we thought was racy during uni!

Anyway none of this seems to help me to find my gentleman. Sigh.
