F1 2007/2008 Winter Testing and Rumours

Im really glad that Heikki moved over to McLaren. Its definatly a good move by McLaren. I think he would be suited better to work alongside Hamilton.

Anyone who cant compete on the same level would be a better partner for Hamilton. The last thing you want is to pair up a top driver (Hamilton) with another top driver. If you do this, you will have disharmony (Senna&Prost, Hamilton&Alonso). McLaren know this. At the beginning of 2007, they had no idea that Hamilton would be so good, so decided to have him partner Alonso, believing that there wouldnt be a problem. As the season progressed however, Hamilton's ego got bigger as did Alonso's paranoia. Ultimately, this led to serious disharmony.

Ron Dennis lied and stated that he isnt interested in having a team full of hugs and kisses and that he wanted a competitive team more than anything. When he let Alonso go, he proved this.

Regards if he will be Hamilton's rear gunner, I doubt it. Hes not that kind of driver. From what you could see from last season, he definatly wanted to do his own thing and win.

Heiki has no choice in the matter. He can either say goodbye to F1 or sign upto McLaren and follow Hamilton around the race track. And besides, Hamilton had already drawn up the shortlist and effectively chosen the driver he wanted to replace Alonso.

If McLaren were interested in scoring as many points as possible in 2008, then they wouldve kept Alonso and forced him to honour his contract.

Again, for Hamilton's sake, I hope he pushes him and gets the best from him like what Alonso did last year.

Heiki will push him, though not nearly as much as Alonso. But then, Hamilton shouldnt need pushing. Like Mansell, Senna, MS and Alonso, top drivers dont need a team mate to push them to greater heights. Great drivers are pushed to the limits by their own will to win and not by team-mates.

I don't think he will be Hamiltons rear gunner, I think they will be left to fight it out.

I wish that would be the case, after all it would be jolly entertaining to see the team implode again, but surely Ron Dennis can't be that daft.

Personally I think Hamilton has that "I am No. 1 in this team" about him. Not that this is a bad thing as Alonso is clearly that kind of character, as was Schumacher (Michael ;)) and they've won a bunch of world titles between them because of it.

Even if Heikki has a free ride in the team, I still suspect Hamilton will have the Finn on sheer pace, and so rear guard duties will fall on him by default. We can always hope than Heikki 'goes all Kimi' and suddenly starts driving like a man possessed, but I think Ron (and Hamilton's dad) hired him as a quick, but ultimately 'safe' No. 2.

Wonder how much info Hekki and Alonso will give to their new teams.
May make Mclaren and Renault even?

Will make very little difference as the cars would have already been developed, the performance of the car will not suddenly improve because there is a new driver. Things like aero packages take months and months of hard work and the slightest tweak can completley unbalance a car.

Try telling that to the people here who think Alonso turned the mclaren of 06 into the car it was in 07 from January 07 to march 07. :D

He didnt "turn the car" into a faster one. He just honed it and got the best out of it. This is something that Hamilton was lacking in and we saw this in the last few races of 2007 when Hamilton was doing his own set-ups and was falling behind Alonso, as a result. When Hamilton resumed copying Alonso's set-ups, his pace came back.

Its all about getting as much as you can from the car. This can make you go seconds/lap faster or slower.

Also, in 3 months, small parts of the car are developed/built. They dont make the car in January and sit on it till November. The cars are continually developed and in some cases entire new version of chassis/nose cones are developed. I remember when Williams made 2 cars in 1991. The 2nd version was the much faster one that allowed them to close the constructors title race on McLaren and was based on testing that was carried out on the first version of the car used in the first part of the season.

If a top team made the fastest car (in testing) in January and stopped all development, by April/May they would no longer be the fastest car and by the end of the season they would probably be at least 0.5s/lap slower than the race winning car.

You're right in a way.The performance tweaks are ongoing. Most teams though do not build a new chassis they just tweak the existing one for the next car.

In the FIA's eyes the McLaren saga is now at an end however Ferrari are pressing on with their own legal action both here and in Italy.

Oh, and Hamilton's done a Button and been caught speeding in France. Whilst his licence has been "suspended" it apparantly only effects his ability to drive in France and won't have the potential problems with his superlicence that Damon Hill had after being banned in the UK a few years back.

Hamilton: "Yes officer, why did you pull me over?"
Police Officer: "You went 50kph over the speed limit."
Hamilton: "Ahh. I didnt know this. You see, a few months ago, an old mate of mine told me that I was allowed to do 150kph in France."
Police Officer: "What was his name?"
Hamilton: "Fernando Alonso. So you see, I'm totally innocent and am not at fault. Honest."

:D

From my experience of going to them:

Ferbruary (not sure if they still do them...was 05 when I went)
April
June

Everything has gone quiet until the car launches - not long now :)

ITV also have a review programme on Sunday at 11am.
