Manuel Almunia for england

Robinson is a better keeper for me. He's had a tough spell and now he's coming out of it. England don't have a goalkeeping dilemma bad enough to warrant the introduction of a Spaniard.

Sorry - great keeper and Im sure he can recover mentally after one or two mistakes , but no he shouldnt play for England

Getting a non-English Manager is one thing but players who are non-English is a whole different thing (although I supported Greg Rusedski until he retired, and thats the same thing in Tennis I guess)

Just look at the National teams around, loads to it. Hell, Italy play an Englishman. Portugal play a Brazilian. Scotland play an Englishman.

Those countries NEEDED those players to represent them though. Not so much Perotta but he's been in Italy most of his life hasn't he? That isn't the case with Almunia. We don't need him to represent us and he's been here a few years.

Don't get me wrong, if he gets selected I'll support him as he'd technically be English. I just think we have better options ahead of him in Robinson and Foster.

The didn't NEED them, no country does, but they are the best at the time and at the moment Almunia is one of the best eligable to play for England.

I don't think he's as good as Foster, but Almunia is a very capable deputy (as he's proven), plus Spain aren't exactly short of keepers with Casillas, Canizares, Reina and Valdes.

He wont be 'Technically English' he will have british residency, not the same thing, hell im not even technically english and i was born here.

Yep, he doesn't have English blood in his veins, it's Spanish. I don't think he should play for England - it's one thing to have an Italian manager (and staff), but the actual players should be from their own country.

Rusedski at least has an English mother, if Almunia has any English blood then he can choose to play for England if he wants to, but if he doesn't have English blood and wasn't born here then he definitely shouldn't play for England.

Has this type of thing ever happened before?

Its happened in Cricket and Rugby, cricket has had a lot of foriegn players over the years.

Iirc Tony Dorigo played for England, and he was an Aussi???

At the absolute minumum people who play for their country should be born here, im not too fond of the likes of Rusedski, pieterson et al, who are only here 'cos their own national tems are either crap or wont have them.

He's not good enough to get in the Spanish squad let alone play for their first team so it's probably in his best interests to look for another country to play for. Just hope it's not England.

His a ok but likes to rush out and can be dodgy.

His rushing out is one of his strengths, I've never seen a 'sweeper-keeper' as effective as him. Basically it gives you the option of playing a high line in defence as anything played over the top he will be onto like a flash and the ball will be in the stand quicker than you can say Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Of course with this style of keeping there will be the odd occasion when he misjudges it and leaves the net unguarded. That's part and parcel of the way he plays, in the same way that with say Andreas Kopke you always knew that we would punch 90% of high crosses into the box - every now and again he wouldn't clear his area and it could cause a problem, but he was still very effective at it and avoided situations other keepers would get themselves in. In the case of Almunia, he avoids getting in many 1on1 situations because he's cleared the ball whereas other keepers would be hanging back in their area.

Heh. The hypocrisy in this is outrageous. I thought the fashion was to be blaming Foreigners for England's woes and rustling up ideas for them to be booted out of our game?

lol

It's a sad predicament to be in where we start thinking about bringing in foreign players to play for an english team

We can't even get a decent english manger in!

First we get an Italian manager and soon we may have a Spanish or Italian goal keeper. :D If this continues other foreign players might move to the Premiership when young, hoping to play for England after a few years.

My take on it, is that it is not right for this to happen, however, if it helps England win a major trophy (which they havent done in decades), then so be it. Once we are winning trophies, then we can start being choosey and begin to use English players and managers.

Where do you draw the line at being englih though, what counts as being english

Does living here the majority of your life but being born in another country qualify you as english?

Will he actually be able to play for England though? He's not English, neither of his parents are English and neither are his grandparents.

Having a UK passport doesn't come into it as far as I'm aware.
