X Box 360 compared to PC Graphics

Sign me up for the PC please :D. I can repair Xbox360's with the 3 rings of death so I could even pick myself up a thought faulty console and get myself a very cheap console. The reason why my m8 has 4 of them and I've not bothered should show my interest in consoles. The idea of just being able to play without any messing about with graphics might grip some people but not me. I like to mess about very quickly as it isn't exactly taxing on the ol' noggin. I also hate no AA in some titles. It doesn't bother me all the time but a lot of the games I've played on the Xbox, I've played on the PC also and there is no comparison.

You've got the right idea ;).

PS2 pads for Pro Evo, Force Feedback wheel (gathering dust though as Im lazy :o) for driving games and If I ever get boring enough to stomach flying from Edinburgh Airport to somewhere virtually in the world then I'll buy a joystick too.

Consoles do own 3rd person though (IMO).

Is it easy to fix Xbox 360's with the 3 rings of death? Does it involve replacing hardware?

You send it back to MS like a few I know had to (or the store you bought it at), they fix it and you seem to get your one back not anothers already fixed one.

Even fixed his broken spring on one of little flaps on the ports on fronty of Console.

Also MS have gave an extended warrenty to all 360's.

I always thought it was a heat issue.

Just the heatsink mounting clips. Google for "x clamp fix" and you'll find a few examples.

So the 3 red lights is caused by the heatsink coming off? So I guess overheating basically so that warns you about it? I have a friend who has to return his Xbox360, the PSU in it blown up lol, I dont have an Xbox 360 but its tempting to get a faulty 3red light one, seen one for £69 but it has no controller and everything, I'll wait untill GTA IV comes out then I might get one.

It's not the heatsink mounting coming off, but rather the badly designed mounting clips causing the motherboard to flex. The idea is that you take the clips off and replace them with bolts which basically helps the pressure spread more evenly. I've done it myself a few times and all consoles are still working great :)

Yes it is easy and no you don't need to replace any hardware. It's just the console overheating. Strip it, clean off thermal junk and add some Arctic Silver. Sometimes the X-clamp has came off or needs to be bent a little bit to help the cooling perform better with added pressure. You would need to buy a heat gun though as it smelts the solder and helps a lot. Well it's a lot more difficult without a heat gun.

My friend buys them off the bay, fixes them and sells them working. It's pretty simple but not something I can be bothered with to make money. If I do ever feel the need for a console though then I'm sorted :). Even the new revised Falcon Xbox360's aren't supposed to be much better than the old revision when it comes to cooling and this is why it got revised. I only heard this from my friend though so I'm not sure about the new Falcon revision being only 2-3'C cooler?. If it is true then more and more xbox 360's with the 3 rings of death will be appearing for a cheap price near you...... :D

I've done one and it worked. Sold it on. My friend has bought 4 and 3 are working perfectly. The other one was just bought a week ago and still to be delivered. So far it's been 100% for success but it might not always end up that way.

I seen that one but never could be bothered ordering any parts and everything is fine so far. Did you do the penny thing for the stability of the motherboard?.

My friend done that to the first two and then left it for the 3rd one and all are working. We bend the clamp so it works better.

So some of the consoles with 3 red lights do actually need something repairing? So if I bought a console faulty for £69 how much could I sell it for fixed and working? (Just the console nothing else)

Well brand new you can get the xbox360 for £149.99 as I'm sure I seen that posted on MaxConsole somewhere. That should bring the the faulty prices down sometime.

Before my m8 could sell the xbox itself for about £100. £150 with all wires. Now it's going to change but as the price change has just happened then it's just a matter of time before you start to see a reflection of the price drop.

In short: Not got a clue the now m8 :o.

Well plenty of opinion here, thanks.

Now what would you go for? As I said I have the ATI X1900XT I "could" stretch to a 8800 GTX OcUK version but what sort of difference would it make to say a 8800GT?
I have also in my water loop a Danger Den maze4 which looks like will work with a
8800GT and a 8800GTS but not the 8800GTX.

Then I've seen people saying there "might" be a price drop early in the new year, is this likely to happen?

Thanks guys you've REALLY helped me along :-)

Depends, the GTX is better at Higher Res with lots of AA/AF in most games (said the same in J.D's Thread), but its 1+year old tech now over the revised newer Tech 8800 GT or GTS 512

Can you wait 8 weeks or so on the totally new Cards ?.

Either way, your 8000 series or 9000 series will make your friend CRY as his Console has 2 Gen old GPU, it came out same time as the 7800GTX for PC, a 7900GTX is better than it.

But its using some sort of X1900 GPU or cut down R600 or something so the 7900GTX actually might not be better than it since the X1900XT is better than a 7900GTX.

Its using a Hybrid botched up GPU (Some kind of R600/R700) same as the Hybrid botched GPU up in the PS3 (some kind of 7900GS).

IMO the PC 7900GTX is better than both but the 8000 series are definitely better.

And I had a 7900GTX over the ATI cause IMO it was better, esp Drivers (and esp Open GL) before Nvidia launched the 8800 and got lazy for a long time with lack of drivers till last 6months or so (so yes they get credit when deserved and kick to teeth when not). :)

X1900XT has better image quality from what I've heard and the 7900GTX could not do AA+HDR like the X1900's ;) and benchmarks suggest the X1900XT was better.

Thats why I said IMO, and I think the IQ was = on the 1900's and 7900's (sure ATI was better before that at Driver defaults), then comes the better Drivers I already touched on.

You could say the 6800Ultra could do HDR when the current ATI X800 or X850 could not, not a big deal as its swings and roundabouts and in the past now.

The current PC cards are at least 2 jumps ahead of the Consoles (be it refreshes or new Gen) and again soon another Jump.

Console and PC hardware can't be compared IMO because with console games it only needs to be optimised for one set of hardware - with PC games, hundreds of combinations of hardware need to be supported, so less performance is gotten out of the same amount of processing power.

That's true. Not to mention with consoles you get all kinds of funky processors like the 360's tri-core six-threaded IBM powerPC based dealy. Not to forget the 360's main memory is high-speed GDDR3@700mhz (1.4Ghz effective) which is shared with the GPU.

Lots to consider. An exclusive title for any console is more likely to make good use of the hardware compared to a port that goes around all the consoles and the PC.

I've always wondered what IMO means but never asked.

What does IMO mean?
