Until the hd war is obviously going one way, i wont bother with either. I dont think they should bother with it. If people want it, they can buy the add-on.

What's everyones thoughts on this?

There's a lot of speculation and rumours going around saying that it may happen.

Here's a couple sources:

I for one hope they do integrate a HD DVD drive in them and i would go out and buy another Xbox for it!

Unless they could offer it at the price the Elite currently retails at there would no point (as the PS3 would be cheaper and aim at the same market).

Unless the noise was reduced from the console what would be the point?

I still think if this does happen, it will be licensed/manufactured through a partner (such as Toshiba), and it will just a be a 360/HD-DVD player in one, games will still be DVD-9.

I just dont understand how it could work? I mean it would be awesome if games did comes on HD-DVD's which made the device silent but what about the games that are already out that run on high speed DVD?

And for the people that didnt go out and buy another, companies would need to produce DVD versions and HD-DVD versions - what about the difference in capacity?

I agree with all your points as usual rp!

I would like one just so that it is all in built into one console without some stupid ghastly add on.

Maybe there might be a new SKU? Would would it be called? The Xbox 360 Elite Pro?!

I'd like it to happen, I'd get one.

Just out of curiousity, what would you gain? And what are the reasons you just don't get the HD-DVD add-on that can be bought now? Presuming that this rumoured version just acts the same as the 2 separates, in one unit.

I hate console add-ons, much neater to have it inbuilt. I wouldn't have bought a seperate blu-ray drive for the PS3, so having it inbuilt was better. That's the reason I would rather buy a standalone HD-DVD player than an add-on for my Xbox360.

It's unlikely that they would start making xbox360 hd-dvd games, more likely they would put a drive that is capable of reading both hd-dvd and dvd9.

I don't think it will happen, they can't make HD-DVD games as the user base will be way too small so the only benefit is for video and for that a separate drive is best so the people that want it can buy it.

The only real benefit would be if games could be placed onto the higher capacity HD-DVD's, otherwise, just buy the add-on HD DVD player.

Games won't be on HD-DVD. Think of it as the other way round - the Xbox 360 technology could be being licenced to manufacturers of HD-DVD / PVR devices. The main function is the HD-DVD player but there will be Xbox 360 game functionality included. It's not a new Xbox.

IMO, if anything, they should integrate the blu ray drive. Since most people are already buying blu ray movies

Crazy New guy, with you crazy New ideas!!!

(Seriously though, Blu-Ray is spanking HD-DVD silly in Europe and USA (in terms of disc sales overall), but it is too early for MS to release a Blu-Ray add-on. It would do untold damage to business relationships they already have with other companies (IMO) ).

They won't integrate Blu-Ray, as Sony are backing it...unless I'm mistaken?

How are both formats doing compared to DVD?

How are both formats doing compared to DVD?

Pitifully tbh, and a part of that is purely because there is 2 formats out there. It's hard to find exact figures but I guess best comparison would be something like "300" on all formats although DVD sales aren't published very often unless they break records, whereas the HD formats come out singing and dancing when they sell even a few more that the other :D

Off the top of my head, I would estimate that sales worldwide would be something like 5000:3:1, DVD:BD:HD just based on rough sales estimates over the last year or so.
