With my last £5 in my hand, I was about to head to the shop and, once again, spend all of my money on Cigarettes. All my money in the last 6 months has gone on cigarettes. Making me unhealthy, destroying my social life with some wonderful friends and making me smell disgusting.

I've had enough of this stupid thing in my head, telling me to smoke. As much as I enjoy a smoke with a cup of tea or after a meal, it's just going to have to stop.

The worst I felt was the other day while helping my brother push his Motorbike. I ran half-way down the street and I was absolutely knackered, weezing, coughing. God, it was disgusting and I was embarassed.

If anyone has stopped recently, how long does the craving last?

If anyone else wants to stop, I suggest you do as I'm doing now and just do it, without a thought.

1 year and 6 months of smoking, that's as far as I'm going. I quit. ******* disgusting.

Roll on the coughs and the shakes.

I have cut down a lot recently no longer smoke at work so only 2... or so a day now. I perfer it to going totally cold turkey but rather than smoking randomly there are a few certain times of the day when I have one so I figure if I can cut down slowly it will be better than quitting, going crazy and starting again.

Just wondering, you say you started smoking over a year ago, you would have been in your 20s according to your profile, what made you start?

This is what I can't understand.
You went 21 years without smoking and then started when you were through your peer pressure stage.
Unbelievable but not as bad as my Dad who started at 45.

My girlfriend's Dad stopped smoking one Monday about 4 weeks ago. Just said out of the blue, that's my last Cigarette. So we all laughed at time..

He still hasn't touched a Cigarette.

GGood Luck..

Do what people do when training dogs. Get yourself to associate smoking with bad things.

For example, every time you light a cigarette, put it out on your face.

You'll be smoke free in no-time!

Can't say I know what it feels like as I find it disgusting to even start :p

Eat fruit or something.

Or put money in a swear jar type thing every time you think of it.

EDIT: less harsh than the above :)

Good luck pal. You're the only person who controls what you put in your mouth. It's only possible to continue smoking if you do it yourself, in the same way the only way you'll get cigarettes is if you go to the shop and buy them.

You're in control, so I wish you the best of luck and well done for making the effort.

No drugs talk - Gilly. Without knowing it, I got hooked on nicotine.

Then I got to China, and every guy I met offered a cigarette. It's what I call a 'smoking culture', and an offer of a cigarette is like a handshake. I weren't pressured, but they were 25p per pack and I had more than enough money to pay.

I was always dead against smoking and always had a go at my family. Go figure.

But this is now the end. :)

My best ever decision was to give up the ciggies, i smoked for 14 years and about 25 ciggies a day, got to the stage your at and thought enough is enough, the worst thing you can do is worry about the cravings, think past them, they are only superficial and last a few minutes tops, chew some chewing gum or eat some fruit instead, the fruit helped me lots plus it's healthy to boot. The cravings never go away, well they do, but i've been quit for 2 1/2 years now and i still 'fancy' a fag every now and again but i wouldn't dare have one. Since i quit i've treated myself to a lot of things i wouldn't normally have been able to buy, a new bike £400, a 32" LCD TV £700, my dSLR kit + extras (well over £2k so far), plus lots and lots of other treats, you need to set yourself easy targets (1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 1 year etc with a bigger prize for yourself each time). Also, believe in yourself and your reasons for doing it.

Good luck :)

That's great, congrats. :)

I've already thought of one thing to treat myself with on Tuesday, a new External HDD. :D
