I've Had Enough!

Here's amoral dilemma I often find my self pondering - what would you do?

My beloved OH smokes, has done for years and I absolutely hate it. The odds are that some time in the near future he will become very ill because of it. Now, the moral dilemma is this; do I go along to all the hospital appointments, rush to be at his side when he has a sudden crisis, sit with him as he comes round from surgery or do I tell him that it's all his own fault and he has to do it all by himself? What would people think of me if I deserted him when he was seriously ill?

The other question I often ponder is why this form of suicide is publicly tolerated. Let's face it, it may be slower than other methods, but it's still a way of killing yourself.

Get drunk instead.

But then I'd give-in to my brains' desires.

I actually find myself sitting here, and at every moment of doing nothing (like looking for an song to play), I automatically go to get a smoke and it's so annoying.

I think the only way to quit is to laugh at yourself. We'll see. :p

Been a couple of hours. Just had a big meal and I really wanted to finish it with a smoke. Now I have a cup of tea to try and forget, and it's just made it worse! :p

It's difficult because, for me, these are the two times in the day when a smoke feels really good.

That's a whole lot of money I've wasted, too. Jeez. Lesson learnt, there. :)

I found snacking on raw carrots worked wonders for me. Obviously there is the whole shape thing to them, but I found it rather satisfying crunching down on them too :) Also get a stress toy or similar to play with, keeps your hands busy when you reach for your tabs usually.

Oh, and make an appointment with you local Stop Smoking clinic asap - they'll keep you in check, can perscribe gum, lozenges, inhalors and patches. Good luck!

Raw carrots are great, I do peel off the dry skin first though. Om nom nom nom. I used to eat them all the time when I was a little kid, and sometimes still do.

Why can't someone just come up with a smoke that isn't so nasty and harmful?

I can literally hear my brain persuading me to smoke right now, and I'm just not going to. It's actually very interesting, to be honest. I might read up about addiction.

I don't like Carrots :(

A mate of mine worked out how much he was going to spend in the next 2 years and then spent it on a rolex. His rational was that he wanted something he'd have with him all the time to remind him...

If I needed to quit (I don't smoke regularly, will have a couple if I'm out on a friday night occassionally) then thats what I'd do...yeah it'd hurt spending that much up front but thats the point...

Dont do that, the more you know about it the more you will be looking for the signs and symptoms, which will only serve to make you more aware of them.

I was in your position not so long a go. I started smoking in my 20's (due to smoking 'green' when out/clubs) One day I decided to smoke one, and I got hooked. I was smoking from 20-40 a day (Marlboro@£5 a pack) and finding it increasingly hard to do anything physical.

Anyways..after a year I decided enough is enough, had my last cig on a sunday, and went cold turkey on the following monday morning. For 2 weeks I was climbing the walls, but it died off after that. Still have the odd urge to smoke (tried it once, went green then bought up the contents of my stomach)

Cold turkey is the hardest, but most efficient way. Pick your last day, and stick to it. Advise anyone you live with beforehand though, that way they know why your in a foul mood :D

It is one of the best things ever tbh you'll be amazed how food tastes, and how bad you really do smell.

Good luck

The only way you are going to quit is with determination and sheer will power.

If like me you have no real "support" to help with quitting then thats the only way you will do it.

I quit roughly 4 years ago, after 3 failed attempts the final one was done without any help at all. I just decided enough was enough and said to myself if i can make this packet of 10 last me all weekend, I will quit smoking on the monday. Well monday came and I still had 3 left so binned em and havent smoked since.

The cravings are very intense for 2-3 days after stopping, so instead of smoking i just ate a banana or something (nothing fatty or you will pile on the pounds).

Generally as a rule of thumb if you can manage 3 days without a ciggy you can quit.
Just do what ever you can to keep you mind off em, remove all traces of ciggys from your room/house and stay clear of people that smoke for 3 days and your set.

Tell you one thing, the first thing you do notice after quitting is just how much it stinks. It smelt so bad I now refuse to date any girl regardless of how attractive they are if they smoke, its a major major turn off for me.

See a lot of people that i know do this, and i hate it... The smell is just unreal, gives me headaches, makes the place smell..

No one would listen to me so i thought if its that good then try it, so i have done, and i can now safely say, i will never do it again, it was the most discusting experience of my life, the taste, smell, feeling in my lungs, ergh.

Never again, and now i urge people even more to stop, because to me smoking is a joke why do it, there is no actual need to do such a thing..

With my last £5 in my hand, I was about to head to the shop and, once again, spend all of my money on Cigarettes. All my money in the last 6 months has gone on cigarettes. Making me unhealthy, destroying my social life with some wonderful friends and making me smell disgusting.

I've had enough of this stupid thing in my head, telling me to smoke. As much as I enjoy a smoke with a cup of tea or after a meal, it's just going to have to stop.

The worst I felt was the other day while helping my brother push his Motorbike. I ran half-way down the street and I was absolutely knackered, weezing, coughing. God, it was disgusting and I was embarassed.

If anyone has stopped recently, how long does the craving last?

If anyone else wants to stop, I suggest you do as I'm doing now and just do it, without a thought.

1 year and 6 months of smoking, that's as far as I'm going. I quit. ******* disgusting.

Roll on the coughs and the shakes.

Some things i found helpful.

Put the money you'd spend a day in a jar/bottle and watch it mount up, then spend it on something you really enjoy.

Try not to be around people who smoke or encourage you.

But think about how much better you'd feel.

Good luck mate and don't give up.

Worked for me, been clean for over 3 1/2 years now. That and having a moment of clarity whilst hacking up phlegm into a bowl by the sofa at 3am in the morning after I had left the bedroom to let the other half get to sleep. Absolutely disgusting, sold the remainder of my duty free's the next day and havent smoked since.

Thing for me is, the money argument really doesn't work. Rollies cost me hardly anything...I probably spend about £4.50 a week on cigarettes which is nothing...

£5 a week still mounts up, it'll take you months.

Just think about other things, your health, kids if you have any / plan to.

There is not 1 single benefit smoking gives you, it only helps kill you.

My Uncle died in the week and my Mother said "He was a heavy smoker you know, I knew the ciggies would get him in the end".
He was 85 :)

The other thing is I don't think you smokers understand how much you stink.
People often come into my house and when they've gone we have to get the air freshener out because of the smoke coming off their clothes.
My Dads the worst when he brings something round in a plastic bag.
As soon as he's gone we have to get the plastic bag out of the house because its like a slow smoke machine.

I must admit that its great singing in pubs now and not having to compete with the smoke.
I can walk into my house and not have to change my clothes immediately.
I can also open up my 'gig' cases without taking them outside to let smoke out.
However, because of the dwindling punters in pubs I'd gladly put up with the smoke again.
