Hi all,

Need your advice on some av equipment i need to get for my brother. he basically has £1000 spend on a new amp and 5.1 speaker set.

He has to spend <£500 on each item.

Ive narrowed down the amps to the Onkyo 605 or Sony STR DG910. I like the Sony because it has an extra HDMI compared to the Onkyo. It also costs £100 less than the Onkyo. Out of the two which would you suggest and the reasons why.

He also needs a 5.1 setup too. Whats good out there for <£500. Any suggestions would be welcome....the £500 budget will also include speaker wire and all other cables etc needed to get up and running. I quite like the look of the Mordaunt Short Avant Premiere Plus set.

If possible he would like to spend the least he can but has set a max budget on £500 for each item.

Your suggestions would be very welcome.

Cheers

Cheers for the links mate.

It will be hooked up to a 37" LCD that only has a dvi input as its sole HD connection. It does 720p. Will be primarily used for movies and tv viewing, with occasional PC, Xbox360 use, and ps3 to be added at a later date. Also the occasional music listening too.

The cash is burning a hole in his pocket which he has to spend...as his tv is a bit old and has only one connection, the av unit will sort out his connection probs and future proof it for a good few years. Upscaling and being able to view hd sources is essential; the tv doesnt have HDMI or component, which currently has to be used through a dvi adaptor...so having a unit that accept all the hd connections and feed it through to his dvi will be what im looking for.

np mate different websites, always good to get a variety of responses :)

not sure about reliability, but they won best receiver award under £500 2007, that should mean something :)

Yeh i guess the 605 is the one to get...its just the speakers...i just replied over at av but i like the look of the Mordaunt short premier plus package...looks like it packs more punch than the Jamos.

what price are you finding them at? a quick search gives a price tag of 400, jamo can be had for 185 :)

the jamos were also awarded best under 500, which includes the MS ;)

it comes down to what you want though, and that has to include looks as well as hit on pocket. :)
