Hey guys,

My mate has just told me that when changing his spark plugs on his Celica GT4 there was oil around the 2 middle spark plugs. Could this be some form of gasket has gone or something? There is no oil consumption that he's noticed.

Any ideas?

Hey mate,

A spark plug shorted by excessive oil entering the combustion chamber is shown below. This is often caused by piston rings or cylinder walls that are badly worn. Oil may also be pulled into the chamber because of excessive clearance in the valve stem guides, or badly worn valve stem seals. If the PCV valve is plugged or inoperative, it can cause a buildup of crankcase pressure. This condition can force oil and oil vapors past the rings and valve guides into the combustion chamber.

Hope this helps some what :D .

If the oil is in the wells around the spark plug then it could be something easy like a rocker cover gasket, or even an error when filling it.

Oil on the plug tips inside the engine is more serious.

Cheers for the replies guys. It may well have just been in the wells. What if oil is on the tips though, what kind of damage has occured ?

Car seems to run absolutely fine too btw.

Its unlikely to be a gasket as the majority of them are metal, unfortunately a common problem on ST205s is not a simple gasket or leak, but that your block has cracked or your ringlands have gone.

How much boost is he running and any mods?

Oil on plugs and your suggesting a cracked block or bust rings?

I know next to nothing about these engines but its probably the cam cover gasket around the plug wells. This will be rubber, either moulded or a simple O ring.

how did he remove the boost limiter? if he just disabled the TVSV then he'll only get LOW boost in all gears.

When you remove the boost limiter you have to get a boost controller of some sort to raise the boost back up to the stock 0.9BAR

That's been done, I did it with him. Blocked the TVSV then put a manual boost controller, and messed with it until it was hitting 0.9bar as you've said.

Hitting 0.9bar on the stock boost gauge or on an aftermarket one?

Jonny - Alas with the ST205 any kind of contamination problem is more likely to be a broken block than a simple gasket :(

Stock boost gauge doesn't show any units :p It's an autogauge boost gauge. Shows near enough the same as my defi gauges, so it's accurate enough.

Absolutely correct, the 3SGTE is renown for this problem. The rubber gasket that sits between the cam cover and cylinder head hardens with age and oil leaks into the spark plug wells.

Yeah same issue with any elastomer, heat + oil = shrinks and dries up.

Cheers for that, and i bet the bloke is happier now he hasnt got a cracked block :P

Just to confirm, 9/10 times this will simply be rocker cover gasket gone, simple to replace.

Had it on mine, 1 & 4 were clean, 2 & 3 were oil covered. Changed rocker cover gasket, left it for a few weeks, checked them, clean as a whistle.

It's definately NOT a cracked block :P
