Another what's this worth? (BMW 318SE)

Tech data will give him an idea of the difference between the chaeper 318i or the pricier to run (I'd have thought) 320i won't it?

I'm sure he'd enjoy the 318i to drive, I find the e46 318i perfectly ok for what it is.

Why would he dread anything going wrong when Tom's already said he's got a good local indy to look after the car? - As I say they are hardly complex vehicles and not expensive to maintain & maintain correctly.

It will cost him more than his focus. Period.

That said I'm totally with you.If he can afford it and run then do it!

I said this from the start.

Doesn't exist. Wiki must be wrong. Will have a look in a second but I can asure you the UK market at least never got an E46 320i before the M54 version.

I don't dispute you, but I'm damn sure my old man had a 320i 6 pot e46 as a loan car a while back - it may have been a de-badged 328i for all I know - I do recall driving it, liking it, but equally remember its nose heavy attitude compared to Mums 318.

2 Years NCB

You want to try 10 yrs. - Sub £280 FC on my old 7.:D

My Focus is worth 3700 Private/3100 Trade ;)

I would be PXing my Focus for it as pointed out above.

I realise that, i was referring to the valuations mentioned earlier in the thread. I ran a S plate 520i for a year at 18, as nice as it was - it was a massive waste of money, nothing really went wrong with it but the littlest things cost mega money. My advice would be to stick with the reliability of your focus until you can truely afford a nice upgrade. Your focus is a 2001 is it not?

Could say the same of my ownership experience of my 728i tbh.

That said, when is running a nice car not a waste of money?

The smartest way to drive is really buy cars that cost as much as a service for a nicer one (few hundred quid in other words) and throw it away when it eventually goes boom or wants a big bill.

But, theres no fun in that imo. ;)

20/month is my internet monthly payment :/

Makes my £107/month on insurance look mega expensive :S

Hmm... not sure what to suggest here. I'm similar age to you and I've had my 530i for a while now, and instantly would say go for it. A few problems though, people will think you're a **** - especially as you're young. I get comments from people (more so now it has a private plate on!) fairly often. Also, you'll become a complete snob, and anything like a Ford or Vauxhall etc. will suddenly seem as if it's come from Ikea. I almost regret jumping to a BMW so quickly because now I can't even begin to imagine owning something that feels cheap inside (and FWD is a no-no too).

Don't underestimate how much parts etc. cost though - even oil is a fair bit more expensive than for your Focus as it'll need fully synthetic BMW LL01 stuff.

I found that private plates get peoples back up, especially when attatched to a large Black BMW!

I was happy to leave my plate on the BMW when I sold it, tbh I don't now know why I bothered having one.

I doubt I'd get another for the reason you list OllyM.

Why does it annoy people if you have a private plate ?

Because they assume you have money to burn on a private plate?

Dunno tbh, just reporting my own experience of having one - tbh it was probably the Big BMW that ****** them off! :D

How tall are you? If you're about 6 foot then you'll struggle to fit in the front, especially with a sunroof as they're rather cramped
I'm near 6'3". Had no problems whatsoever.

If you've test driven a 318i and you're happy with the power, and like the car then I'd go for it. I don't understand why they put such a weezy engine in these things, when 10 years beforehand they had a more efficient 1.8 engine that developed more than 20bhp extra.

As I've said the power output is fine for me at this age. It really isn't just the badge and if people think I'm a **** they should learn to not take a book by it's cover :D

1. but you were looking at a 2litre focus before as you wanted more power? a 318 is hardly any step up from a 1.6 focus...

2. dont judge a book by its cover? its coming across that thats excactly what your doing, just going for the badge...

just wait a year or two and get a proper car. :)

Its big, heavy, slow and pretty sparsley specced, apart from the badge, i fail to see in what way you are getting a 'better' car.

Dont do it, you will regret it, MRK's was a different situation, he was coming from a crappy old car, your Focus is relatively new, and is a bloody good car in its class.

Save your money and buy a proper BMW, atleast then wehn everybody thinks your a ****, it will be worth it:p
