Another what's this worth? (BMW 318SE)

I don't dispute you, but I'm damn sure my old man had a 320i 6 pot e46 as a loan car a while back - it may have been a de-badged 328i for all I know - I do recall driving it, liking it, but equally remember its nose heavy attitude compared to Mums 318.

It might have been a 2000-2006 320i then?

Easy you're right and I see what you're saying. Buying this BMW would stretch my finances, it's something which I have to think about.

If it's going to stretch your finances by buying the car then it is not worth it in my opinion. If your Focus is the same situation then fair enough but why put yourself potentially in a mess for the sake of a car.

It's not just the regular servicing costs and tyres etc you have to consider. What would you do if for example a head gasket went? You'd be looking at a good chunk of money to fix it.

As it would if it went on the Focus. Just because its a BMW does not mean a head gasket would be that much more expensive to fix than the Ford - labour would be the biggest part of the bill and it would be a labour intensive job on most cars.

Tom has already said he has access to a good independent garage, so,if the worse did happen, he's not going to be paying the silly labour rates BMW charge.

Yeah but he knowsthefocus is a good car, the beemer is unknown.

Sure, but he has no more idea when / if something like a head gasket is going to pop on his focus than he does with the prospective BMW.

Such things are very difficult to diagnose prior to the event. :)

but his focus is a decent low mileage iirc? so any mechanical issues are very unlikely, especially with the 1.6 zetec lump... a very good one at that.

the equilivant bmw would be a lot higher and older, hence failure is to be at more likely. if he had a old punto or something then yes the bmw would be a good option, but no, the focus is a VERY good car for what it is, therefore he should just save up for a proper upgrade, not a risky side step.

why risk his current financial security for a badge?

Can I just repeat for the likes of Fonzee. I will not just be purchasing for a badge :).

It's one of the cheapest/best options for what I can currently afford.

I'm just after something new to play with.

then whats wrong with a mondeo?

it will be at least twice as cheap to run

not trying to be funny mate but i wouldn't dream of a bmw unless i had a half decent income.

i have gone from a focus 1.6 to a mondeo 2.0, IMO the mondeo offers a lot more smiles per gallon, it's a really nice car tbh.

Hmm depends, seen the news about the man who bungs exhaust pipes with his man vegetable ?
