Hey everyone

Im planning on gettin a new hard drive, i wanted a 500GB hard drive to store music, video and pictures. Is there any particular make, model i should go for?

seagate (7200.11), western digital (WD5000AAKS) or samsung.

You get a 5 year warranty with seagate 7200.11's. This is what i would buy. However they are not as quiet as the western digital drives. I dont own any samsung drives so i dont know about those but I have never seen any bad words spoken against them.

id go with the seagate, i have 2 of the 7200.10 (250gb) and cant fault them. will be getting 2 of the .11's (500gb) when i get the money.

i have had WD in the past, very good HDDs, Samsung i hate with a passion, had a 120 and lost everything on it, it was noisy and just a poor performer IMHO, this was a few years back, dont know what they are like now

After one of my drives had a SMART event a couple days ago, I just got a 500G 7200.11 today and it seems very very quiet so far. Busy moving my OSes over to it, so will see how it performs. I've always been very happy with Seagate though.

For those of you who have the 7200.11's, you may have an older firmware installed which makes your drives cache come up as 8MB instead of 32MB as it should.

Heres the fix for those of you who don't know about the issue :).

And also I would go for the samsung as my current drives practically silent, I would also look into western digital and seagate as they all make top notch drives.

Same position, its always between the Samsung, Seagate and WD.
From what I have seen/researched. Samsung is the most quite out of the 3.
But then my friend said his WD (x3) are quite too.
I don't know :/
