Wolfdale e8200, e8400 and e8500 available for Pre-Order!

oooo i want the E8400 :O in process of building a new pc, bouht 4 items that were on sale this week so that 1/2 the computer bought, was planning on getting the E2200, but these new chips look soo damm tempting!!!! 6mb cache nice, 3GHz stock... mmm clock to 4+ on air!!!! damm thats sexy but yet they are 84£ more than the E2200.... hummm risk it for a biscuit? probably will :P

Could always get an 8200 instead if you wanted to lower the cost, they're prolly good for 3.8...

Hehe lots of discussion as expected, interesting to see what thought processes and emotional investment goes into a buying decision for a new CPU, its akin to the naming of ones child or the design for a tattoo.

Heres my thoughts on the subject. . . . . if you are an overclocker and a bit of a power-user then these new chips looks pretty cool, can't see any problem with buying them if you have the cash, the premium of the E8500 compared to the E8400 is interesting, I would be interested in an E8500 myself as I think that extra 0.5 multi could be just the ticket to achieving even higher clocks or perhaps taking the strain off the memory and motherboard. . .

I've never had a big appreciation for onboard chip cache but having seen a few user review comparing different amounts of cache and its impact on gaming once the GPU is no longer a bottleneck has made me come around to think that maybe some extra cache is a useful thing, so 6MB cache on a dual core is neat.

Willz made an interesting comment about whether he should snap up one of these chips now because in the future they will all be lesser clockers, well I'm not sure if thats true or not but I bet there are a few people buying these chips now who think the same. I've not found this to be true myself and I thought that chips normally get better as time go by, for example it seems the latest batches of G0 stepping quads are clocking very nicely and they cost about 1/4 of the price, based on that it would seem that people who do wait a little while before buying into Wolfdale should not be worried, they will most likely pay less for their chip and also may get a nice overclocker too.

I would really like to play with these new chips too but I am still setting up my new platform with new mobo and new memory so its gonna be a good few weeks before Im ready to pop a new chip in but I am looking forward to peoples results. . .

Did I miss anything important? God that Sake really takes your head off! :D

I've decided as soon as I got an E8400 and cleaned the rubbish off the E6600 and packaged it I'm selling it as I have decided that I will be getting an E8400, I'm going to put it up for sale later tonight or tomorrow though maybe ship it ASAP so I get it out of the way.

going to be selling my quad for one of these :)

Is there really much point? I know you've upgraded before and not been impressed (I believe) the gains here aren't going to be much for you surely?

/sticks with E6300. :D

It's a new toy that will probably do over 4ghz. Why the heck not ! :p

Depends what you do I suppose, we all know games are GPU limited (for the most part) so I don't see the point in sidestepping, more surprised at your choice though, I'd value a 3.6Ghz Quad Core over a 4.4Ghz Dual any day, for games like UT3 that use Quad you're looking at a downgrade, same thing for Photoshop/Video editing.

I'm just quite bored with the quad and need something else to mess with really...also I'm not really keen on upgrading my watercooling and for a good 24/7 clock I need to if I want to keep the quad.

Also in games since they are pretty much dual core optimized a 4.4ghz Wolfdale will do better than a 3.6 quad.....that is until games like Alan Wake come out..but that's not for awhile and I'm sure I'll have gone through a few more toys by then

Upgrade for me since my E6600 only does 3.4 max and 4Ghz would be an upgrade for me. And 4Ghz is a good upgrade lol. I'm sure Alan Wake will run on dual cores fine too.

What for though? I can't notice any speed increase from 1.8 and 3Ghz in Windows, can't see 600Mhz doing any good.

Then again I don't play games at 1024x768. :D

I play games at 1680x1050, I dont see what getting a Q6600 is going to do? I have a P35C DS3R...

I'd just stick with the E6600, you're not going to notice anything unless you're really that fussed about a few benchmark scores.

Probably end up being disapointed at the end of it, but your money I know I'd regret it after myself.

I see no downsides, even if you encode Video, it wont take 2x as long as a Quad ;).

The future is Quads, but then some in here will be slagging the Native Quad owners cause there is a new 2 " Quads thrown on a Wafer Oct Core " out :p.

And hope Alan Wake uses Quads better than Crysis as it was supposed to use them.

Im looking forward to my kit coming, I hate this Mobo (total headache even at stock), but I think I try this current CPU in new Mobo 1st to see what it can do with a simply Mobo swap.

Course it will, it was demoed running on dual just fine year or so back.

I'm after a cooler running chip with some decent clock power.

E8400 will do me until Naheleam (SP).

Put it this way

I would not go from a 3.6Ghz Q6600 to one of these but I would go from a 3.6Ghz E6600 as I am doing, it IS an upgrade.

Hell for the most part I just want something new to play with. PC hardware has been so stale as of late.

The world does not revolve around 1 game, and it will be made to run fine of Duals, most peeps dont have Quads outside the tech heads here, thats if it is even coded to use fully, time will tell.

My E6600 gets to 63 degrees load, I'm going to need a new cooler as I dont like thos temps so might aswell get a new CPU since I want something a little faster, I'm going to post on another forum see what people think, cant post here cause it'll get flamed or locked.
