Wolfdale e8200, e8400 and e8500 available for Pre-Order!

They are already are cheaper

The 65nm 3GHZ E6850 is still £179 and the newer 45nm 3GHZ E8400 is only £145

Yeah, I guess. But I was looking at them as in terms of range equivalents...ie. top of the range Wolfdale: E8500 = top of the range Conroe: E6850. But yeah, I'll be very happy if I can get my hands on an E8400 for under £120 by next month... :D

As I said it wont matter to some, but I dont see point in paying over the odds for 2 Dual stuck together and it aint needed yet for most peeps inc myself.

I cant answer for others but as I prim Game the faster Dual is still the best option today for me.

I seriously doubt alan Wake will need 4 Cores to run smoothly, who is to say it even uses 4 Cores well, may be another Crysis.

But I dont get it, if it performs better than the ones that are native then whats the problem? Is it a matter of principle or something?

Succinct and very nicely put!

though I don't think we have seen a review showing the E8400 overclockability...

Correction... there is this one:

http://en.expreview.com/?p=68&page=4

I don't get the impression it was pushed, but they only got it to 4.0Ghz.

The Xbit Labs review has the E8200 at 3.9Ghz and the E8500 at 4.4Ghz on air. So I guess we are talking 4.0 to 4.2Ghz averages for the E8400.

Lol, I dont need the Quad, its offically an old 1066FSB (sure you can OC it) and its older 65nm.

Just no need right now but possibly would buy if it was a Native 45nm Quad and could hit 4GHZ. :)

But sure principle is party it, BTW, the AMD's win for Memory Bandwidth everytime (intregated Memory Controler).

Hi,

I was about to get a Q6600, but am i right in saying that for general use, gaming etc an E8400/8500 would perform better. And the Q6600 would only perform better for tasks where all 4 cores were being utilised?

Yeah that only makes sense if you actually use all 4 cores, Everyday.

Also if you do use all 4 cores, How much time is it actually saving you in applications. 5mins? 1Hr?. It does jack for gaming.
So? CPU speed overall does jack for gaming on most games, unless you're playing at a low res.

Why would you go for 2 cores when you can get 4 for little extra? It's not like the 8200/8400 are much faster than the 2.4 Ghz Q6600, which can be overclocked.

It just does not make any sense at all. Sure Quad is not needed and I don't intend on one for a while yet, I still have my E6300 from December 2006.

Yes, but the difference will not be large. However when 4 cores are being utilized the difference will be pretty big I believe. (Photoshop, Video editing, SupCom (I think))

I only paid £129 for my 8400 now, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them for £120 before long.

Most wont agree with you esp for Gamers, the reviews show a faster Dual is better suited, not everyone can/does OC.

I certainly wont buy an old Q6600 today, Im only getting this new CPU as someone wants my CPU :).

" Your order consisted of the following items:

Item Qty Price
Asus Striker II Formula nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard 1 £194.99
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB) - Retail 1 £173.99 "

:D

Wont another problem come up if I dont buy an E8400 ASAP? As the longer you leave it the more likely you'll get a crappy overclocking chip like with the E6600's, they were awsome at first then they were crappy like mine.

cuts both ways. duals can be overclocked too. It's still a minimum .5Ghz difference - that's quite a bit more oomph for those apps that don't use the 2 extra horses - ie practically everything out there :)

Does OCUK or anyone else know what mobos are compatible with these Wolfdale E8*** CPUs?

Many thanks
