Make sure you verify your account and that there address is verified and a few other things and then you are protected by the sellers guarantee.

You mean you didn't realise there would be fees when you sold it? Im pretty sure its all publicly available information, you can even use oneof the many online calculators to work it all out before you sell.

The rates are there clearly stated before you buy anything so you only have yourself to blame tbh
You've not read the original post properly, he is waiting 7 days AFTER the cheque has been cleared before sending the item. This probably means the buyer won't be getting their item until 3 weeks after the auction end. If I wasn't told about this when I was given the address for the cheque then I'd be annoyed as well, no one else I've dealt with waits for a cheque to clear and then another 7 days on top of that - it doesn't even make any sense to do it as a dodgy cheque can be removed from your account long after that.
I believe it is you that has to read the OP again. He is simply waiting 7 days after receiving the cheque until it receives "certainty of fate" as that link put it. If I were using a cheque I would assume the same would happen to me. 7 days is not that long to wait if you're going to insist on using a cheque.

In my re-reading it I seem to have misread 'after' as 'for'
But still my interpretation is that he meant 7 days after the cheque went into his account. 7 days would give it time to be guaranteed. Clearence might simply mean him lodging it.

Words of wisdom. My phone sold twice for near 600 pounds - I ended up losing the final value fee thingy because I'd clicked the wrong button on the Ebay interface or something.

Did you tell the buyer when you gave them the address to send the cheque to that you wait 7 days after the cheque has cleared?
AS I found out the law was changed november 2007. You put the cheque in. On the 6th day it is yours regardless. So it's more like 2 weeks and is a very good way to stop fraud.
But it should be stated in the advert.
Yes agreed, it may be good practice but it's certainly not common practice on eBay so I'd put something in the auction to avoid a situation like this. As a buyer if I saw that in the advert I'd definitely either pay by a different method or avoid the item altogether as it would mean waiting ages for it to arrive.
Hmm, yeah it certainly reads like he waits 7 days after the Cheque has cleared meaning you are waiting in effect 10 - 12 at least, after putting the cheque in your account before sending the item? I would be a bit annoyed too then, if that is the case.
I always waited the 4 or 5 days until the funds showed in my account then sent the item. Even then I clearly marked it in the auction that I did this. You accept a risk selling ebay at the best of times, but you have to be reasonable and waiting what could be up to two weeks to post the item isn't really reasonable imo.

Actually if you work it out he probably doesn't even send the item until 2 and a half weeks at least - 5 working days for the cheque to clear and then another 7 working days after that.
Lets get one thing straight. A STOLEN cheque can be taken back from your account for upto something like 9 months after the fact. If you dont believe me then phone your bank on monday and ask them what happens if you get a cheque paid into your account which clears but then turns out after 6 months to have been from a stolen chequebook. Cheques that are stopped by the sender and havnt got funds are a different case but stolen cheques certainly can be claimed back by the bank for quite some time.

I personally had a £50 stolen cheque taken back out of my account by natwest over 7 months after it had "cleared" so i know it happens. I sought advice from the CAB at the time and was told that the bank were well within their rights to do this. I now never accept cheques unless i know the person and i know where they live. Some banks have a more lenient policy on stolen cheques under a certain amount but some just claim them back no matter what.
