We're all going to die

Yse but then there's the 'plasma discharge' thing. Apparently if the asteroid's negatively charged we're all screwed, even if it does miss us by 500,000km.

This guy seems to do a pretty good job of debunking the conspiracy theorists,

http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/...-me-asteroid-2007-tu24-is-no-danger-to-earth/

"The asteroid will miss by hundreds of thousands of kilometers, so there will be no direct impact. There’s no such thing as a "negative asteroid", like they claim, the plasma discharges they talk about are a totally different phenomenon, and nothing like that has ever been seen in an asteroid, nor will it ever. Asteroids don’t carry charges like that, and wouldn’t couple well with the Earth’s magnetosphere the way they claim anyway.

We’re totally safe from this asteroid in January, and I’d bet anything on it. Literally."

sorry to be boring, it was quite exceiting thinking that earth's impending doom was going to happen sooner rather than later.

Actually I was just reading that article!

To me it's all subjective - seeing as I don't really know/have no hope in ever understranding the science behind this - why believe one person and not the other? It all comes down to what you want to believe. Personally I'm not fussed either way. If a big asteroid is going to knock us all out of orbit there's nothing we can do about it anyway.

Nuke it? Send Bruce Willis up there?

generally its bets to bet on the guy who isn't saying the world will end.

Going purely on past statistics of course ;)

no but thats not neccessarily a good thing - smaller it is more time mavity has to have an effect on it.

remember the moon will have a part to play in it too - it will come between both the moon and the earth - frighteningly close!

1.4 lunar units means outside the moons orbit, no?

some of it is subjective, allot of it is science based on facts, one important fact is that the asteroid is not going to hit earth, that we know, (unless nasa are lying to us which I doubt) as it's trajectory has all ready been worked out and is passing us by 1.4 lunar distance (LD), so the only potential threat we have is the plasma discharge which is highly unlikely, I'm know expert either but what that gentleman says seems to make scientific sense, and I'm no big preacher of science, I'm a spiritualist more than anything but that doesn't mean I discount science.

I'm not playing devil's advocate here but how do you know that? Isn't that just our self-defence mechanisms kicking in and believing what we want to believe?

claiming that lighting is cased by plasma discharge from the sun would seam to discredit the other guy though.

<borrows tin foil hat from Emlyn_Dewar>

or maybe the man debunking the conspiracy theorists is really an alien, y-e-s-s-s, <strokes chin> thats right, and his mission is to take media attention off the astoriod because really it's a space ship in disguise, dun....dun.....duuuuuuuuuunnnnn !!

<calmly passes tin foil hat onto next poster>

I dont normaly buy in to the world is going to end treads, normally cos its nothing real, but is there anything to worry about with this one, been doing some reading and some say no and some say yes, from what i can understand the yes ones are from conspirisy websites? is this correct?
