HOWTO : Skive at work

I'm the only I.T. guy in our company, so its easy for me. Whenever i hear the door to my office opening i bury my head in a pre-opened pc case, or dive into the comms cabinet right behind me.
God, i love being in my own little I.T. dungeon, its great. I can also just sit and look out the window at the traffic on the M1, which is about 300yds from me.

I'm the same I spend the whole day on here or irc, sometimes I might do some windows updates

Look at the big important IT man with all that responsibility.

Just say you're sick. When they ask, "How sick?" you say, "I'm going to sleep with my sister".

If you want to skive just go sick. Easy.

Pulling sickies can jeopardise potential bonuses.

Reminds me so much of the IT Crowd... :p

There are millions of people out there struggling to make the grade and get a decent job with decent pay and prospects.

You're paid to work so I suggest you get on with doing that I'm sure there would be thousands of people waiting to step into your shoes so to speak.

If everyone did their job as efficiently as possible, there would be more unemployed as the extra "man hours" would be filled by people working instead of walking around examining coffee machines all day.

He's got a point, people should take their responsibilities seriously, as he says others would gladly do the work that he's putting off.
Yeah but it's not his place to tell someone else what to do. It's the OP's choice to be a bit slack and I'm sure he'll accept the fallout if he gets in trouble for it.

Plus I'm sure most of the unemployed masses couldn't do his job by a long way!

Can't Skive here, if i don't do the work, client/Court/other side won't get the letters/documents and deadlines will come and everyone will know and i'll be in the crapper.

For the record, I'm not a lazy git as this thread suggests and have been recognised as being one of these 'above and beyond' characters wherever I've worked. It's just facts are facts and we all do skive a little at work whether it be a little surfing, chatting or trying out new software for your phone etc etc

LOL@this. Getting a decent job is about making the mark in interviews and having an average skill set. If they are unemployed its due to their own fault and neglegence to pay attention to to those two traits.

Trust me I know this from experience when I gave up working for 2 years not because I couldn't get a job more like I didn't asert myself to look ! When agents rang me up and fixed up interviews without initially applying for them I would fall flat on my face simply because I did not assert myself correctly.

However when I was getting desperate and started to look properly I got a job within a week of sending out my application.

Yes and no - A lot of IT jobs specify this that and another but when you get into the job 9 times out of 10 it's ******. The stuff you do, a kid could do. Most of my contracts/roles have been of this nature - they pay you for what you know in reserve ie all the skills you have but don't use on a daily basis.

I guess this thread has opened my eyes to what the real problem is - too much horse power - too small a task to do. (ps ladies I'm not talking about what's in my pants btw). I've got to escape :D

OK enough faffing around. I'm off to compile apache and 'fix' some 'stuff'

Skiving a small amount is fine when it isn't busy, I mean there is no point being overly pro active, same some strength for when it gets busy and ou have to work extra hard. You are kind of managing your energy, charge it up when it is quiet but when it gets busy work your ass off. Your boss wont mind this either.

I am off work today, started feeling a cold comming on yesterday, with my chest record I can't afford it to get worse. I just need to keep warm for a day or so and eat loads of Vitamin C and it usually goes away.

And I agree about the unemplyed, it isn't always about how hard the job is, most of them just can't arsed getting out of bed every day at 7am.
