Radeon HD 3870 X2 Launch On Jan 23rd, Costs US$449

Fan just done nothing when idle really just kinda spins a tad! However it becomes hd2900xt-a-like if you pump it up yourself. They just managed to tone it down for the 3870's due to the manufacturing process keeping the smaller chips cooler at stock :)

And a different fan for the standard 3870's. The 2900 fan was pretty noticable even at slow speeds.

ROFL!

Said I'd be back to rub your faces in it and now the benches are out I just have to say I owned you guys who though this was going to be anything other than crossfire on a single card.

This ones mainly for Willhub ;)

Thanks for that. See you when you get back.

BTW I never said this card was useless, rubbish or anything else to that effect. I just said earlier in the thread how this card was the functional equivalent of two 3870 but on one card. Others jumped to conclusions about circumventing crossfire and I tried to correct that but got jumped on. I thought a bit of light hearted "told you so" was in order.

The atmosphere is a little too heavy around here. Some of you guys need to relax a little.

Weird TF2 results but explained here;
Before everyone starts yelling about these scores, let us just say that we probably ran each test for this card about 20 times to make sure we weren’t doing something totally stupid. The fact that we got higher scores at 1920x1200 resolution than we did at 1280x1024 really only points to one thing: at the settings with which we test the game, the Radeon HD 3870 X2 turns Team Fortress 2 into a CPU limited application. Regardless, no other card we have tested manages to cause this kind of behavior from TF2, which can only mean the HD 3870 X2 takes the top spot in this game as well. Perhaps all that canoodling on Alcatraz back in 2004 is finally paying dividends for AMD/ATI.

Looks like another flop from AMD/ATi.

Oblivion - it's cpu limited - hardly no difference there.
Team Fortress 2 it's beating all cards at 1900s.
And crapsis...

From those benchmarks I wouldn't say the card's a flop.

Looks like another flop from AMD/ATi.

It is known that the 3870x2 (and very likely the 9800 GX2 too) uses the PCIe bus very intensively. The PCIe 1.1 seems to bottleneck the card
What motherboard are using to test this high end card?
An X48? No
x38? No wayyyy
P35? eeerrr... no
No, they are using a freaking nvidia mobo with PCIe 1.1
