Partly inspired by this article (http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13506_1-9858188-17.html) what console would you consider the greatest console of all time?

Three come to mind for me as challengers:

  1. SNES - Partly because it was what I had as a kid, but also because of its diverse and strong line up of games. Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, Star Wing etc.
  2. Sony Playstation 2 - Because it brought gaming to the masses.
  3. Sega Dreamcast - Because it was so ahead of its time.

From these I'd go with the SNES. The Playstation, while an all conquering beast, didn't really have that many games I enjoyed. The Dreamcast was ahead of its time, but failed commercially and I fear there is definitely a case of rose tinted vision when people look back at it.

What about you?

Mine would be

1 - Sega Mega Drive, simply cause of the time spent playing it, some great memories
2 - Playstation 2, as said brought gaming to the masses, while that was maybe not such a great thing (lots of dire titles) it did bring gaming to a new level IMO, even though most of it was Sony PR work, did deliver some great titles though.
3 - Sega Dreamcast, like above brilliant console but just failed to deal with the Sony PR (see above)

But pretty hard to pick any one console, most consoles have given some fine gaming moments, but if pushed I would take the Sega Mega drive :)

1. Sega Dreamcast - I don't need to say much here, it was fantastic, the games were fantastic and its such a shame it died before its time :(
2. SNK NeoGeo AES - Quite simply THE best 2d machine, even now they still churn out Metal Gear and King of Fighters games and every year they look more impressive, not bad for a console of that age. Admittedly it's all very overpriced.
3. PlayStation 2 - An Awesome back catalogue of games, appealed to a wide range of people, I've only recently got a PS2 and so am working through the back catalogue now (not an easy task)

1. Mega Drive - My most played console ever and it had some real classics such as streets of rage, golden axe, toejam & earl plus a whole lot more!

2. Playstation - Excellent catalouge of games and created a lot of excellent franchises such as resident evil and metal gear solid( i know it was released on the nes and some other older systems but did anyone care about it then? :p)

3. Amiga 1600+ - Loved my old amiga, i remember having over a 100 floppy discs/games :D

My Top 3

1. Sega Dreamcast - A few really good games for this during it's short life
2. Xbox 360 - Can't remember a console with IMO so many good games
3. Sony Playstation - Can remember being amazed by this when moving up from a Snes + MegaDrive. So many of todays games started out on the PSX.

I find it hard to look past the Dreamcast, Nintendo64 or Xbox360 amd even harder to choose between them. The top3 are easy for me.

Xbox360
Sega Dreamcast
Nintendo 64

I'd have to say the playstation. it was a pretty big leap from the snes and megadrive era, going from cartridges to disks (i know the megaCD was around as well as the sega saturn but they never really took off), the level of graphics in some games and the idea of playing a game in full on 3d. just awesome :D

also did it not spawn the begenning of some of todays quality games or game styles (or sequals should i say?). The metal gear series is hugely different from its originals on the NES since it was released on the PSX and its still one of my all time favourite games (metal gear solid), the same can be said for the final fantasy series also, huge difference compared to its originals when it was released on the PSX

*i may be completly wrong with some of these facts lol, please correct me if i am

I've had quite a few consoles in the past but the 360 tops the lot, with the Megadrive coming in a close second in my books. I wish I got to experience the Dreamcast because everyone goes on about them. Think I was in uni when those things were around.

1. Playstation
2. Playstation 2
3. Playstation 3
4. Xbox 360

Playstation revolutionised the gaming world imo, at the time of release there was nothing quite like it, it had the wow factor! i have yet to be disappointed with any of the playstation conoles!
