F1 2007/2008 Winter Testing and Rumours

Briatore was the one who fought tooth and nail for his services. I remember Eddie Jordan wanted to keep MS, but the courts decided otherwise.
Fought tooth and nail? That's an interesting euphamism for illegally poached. Schumacher was under contract with Jordan when he moved to Benetton - it cost Benetton a pretty packet when it eventually got to court.

Thats tooth and nail. Briatore wanted the services of MS at almost any cost.

Mercedes and Eddie Jordan were largely responsible for recognising Michael Schumacher's talent and bringing him to the higher echelons of motorsport. It wasn't as if Briatore plucked him from obscurity; after a few races for Jordan every team principle with half a brain wanted to sign him and it just so happened that Benetton were lucky enough to succeed (Tom Walkinshaw, a huge chequebook, Willi Webber and some oily legal contract interpretation were just as instrumental, by the way).

Way off base.

Schumacher did only one race for Jordan before Benetton stole him for the rest of the season and sacked Roberto Moreno. It was an interesting first race - qualified 7th on a track he didn't know that well then the clutch broke on the first lap.

Before this Schuey wasn't that well known. He won the 1990 Macau F3 event having barged Hakkinen off (which served as future warning!) and was in the Merc Sportscar squad as a junior driver in 1991 with Frentzen and Wendlinger.

Benetton obviously saw something of enough interest to make it worth elbowing Moreno without Schuey completing a race lap.

Unable to beat a rookie - the first half of the season, Alonso (and Kimi), were both learning how to drive with the new tyres. Once, they had learnt, in the 2nd half of the season, they both outscored the rookie.

I thought id heard all of the reasons why Hamilton scored more points in the beginning half, but tyres.. thats a new one to me.

Id always thought the change up from A1 to F1 would be bigger than the change of tyres for a world champion and experienced F1 driver..

Rumour had it that Frentzen was a better driver than MS. Once Frentzen arrived at Williams, a lot of people expected him to do great things. Unfortunately, this never happened. The guy looked to be almost too laid back.

and MS stole Frentzen's GF (now Mrs MS..)

:D

I never understood all the hype around Frentzen. I think he got built up because he was a quick as MS in their days at Merc. Frentzen on his day was blindingly fast, but if the car wasn't in the sweet spot he was nowhere.

Hehehe. I couldnt believe it when I heard this. When MS first got married, Murray Walker was comparing the 2 (I think in 1994), and stated that MS is not only driving better than Frentzen on the track, he even got his Mrs. Its almost as if MS had something personal against Frentzen and wanted to prove to him that he is more successful than him, both on and off the track.

Just been having a browse about looking back to the Sauber Mercedes junior team days. Quite a radical idea for the time, taking youngsters from the F3 ranks and teaming them up with experienced old heads like Jochen Mass and Jean-Louis Schlesser. Frentzen et al must have learned a lot, shame there didn't appear to have been any fashion lessons....

I've seen a better version of that where you can see just how bad HHF's jumper is (must be a Christmas pressie from his gran) and just how wide the shoulder pads on MS's blazer are. But it could be worse I suppose.

Nice hair!

Race team or boy band? Make your own minds up.
