Somewhere in the middle.
I used to have a chipped playstation many moons ago and occasionally got the odd copied game, however i felt that i didnt appreciate the games, nor play them long enough to give them a real chance.

Anyone feel that unless you buy a game with your hard earned cash, you dont dedicate the same time to it?

some people have so many games that they cant concentrate on one long enough to enjoy it.

Xbox360 modding crossed my mind, but ive decided that i play games i buy properly. But if i got em free, i would discard them (and its bad for industry of course)

I used to love Pirates on the NES. Take over the French, promoted to the highest ranking and marry some rich guys daughter.

What an ace game, with good sword fights.

i miss that game, remake any one??/

It definitely happens as I know many members here are guilty of it. I went through a period of buying 7 games in 4 weeks last year and had the same problem, but I've gone back over them since.

I assume you just read the thread title, and skipped the actual post? :p

To be honest hilly's post is what I hoped for too. You can get pirates gold remake on the PSP similar to the PC remake. Its pretty good fun. Gets a bit samey after a while but its well worth a play through.

As for pirating games I dont think it makes you appreciate them less, just makes you more selective over what you spend time playing.

When you buy games your more chosy over what you get and if it's good. When you pirate them it doesn't really matter if they suck or not since you've spent a damn-sight less so chances are if you pirate you'll end up with a lot of what you don't want since your ... well ... alittle more greedy.

I think it's more down to the game itself, I've got some retail games I very rarely play yet some others I play more often.

To the OP, yes.

I had about 50 PS1 games, must have played (for longer than an hour) about ten of them.

I would much rather spend £30 on a game as I know i'll force myself to ge tthe most out of it, and ultimately enjoy it more :)

At the moment I have an online games rental account that I use for the games that I would like to play but don't want to pay the full price for. This is somewhat similar to pirating games in that you can have any game you wish and as many as you like (within the limits of the service's rules, 2 disks at once etc.) but I find if anything it just means that I appreciate the good games more and only spend my gaming time on games I really like.

But that was probably because you didnt want to spend time playing the other 40 ? In that way its a good thing you didnt pay and force yourself to play it. You played the ten you really wanted to play.

When I was a poor student money was tight, piracy was an option and allowed me to play games. Now time is tight I tend to relish buying a game from the shops and being selective.... I guess you can't condone piracy but I'd definitely agree I pay a game a lot more attention if I have paid for it.

What about the other side of having so much choice though? You end up with so many games that you play some that you'd never consider buying, and once every now and then, that game is actually pretty good. I've lost count of the number of strange gems I've found in old Mega Drive/SNES ROMs, not to mention recent console stuff. If the new Fire Emblem ever comes out over here, I'm definitely buying it, yet had it not been for piracy, I probably never would have found the series.

Without piracy, I probably wouldn't have discovered half the music I love, or many of my favourite TV series. Just because you pirate stuff doesn't mean you should then ignore ever paying for things. I still buy CDs and DVDs, just now I often know whether its any good before I get it.

I tend to rent through Lovefilm to get an idea of a game. After an hour or so, if I like it, I'll buy it otherwise it just gets sent back.

With the Ps1 I was guilty of it, I'd buy a job lot of games and skim the surface of them all. With the 360 though which I do pay for I have been just as guilty of ripping through a game and getting it sold on while it's still worth something.

I almost sold COD before xmas because I thought about re-couping my outlay, which would have been a mistake, even today I fought the urge again to sell it while I would still get over £20 for it.

So even paying for games can sometimes make me not get the best from them.

I've never bought a dodgy game and I never plan to. I don't personally think it's right anyway and if you can't afford to buy the game then simple: don't. I was at a party recently and this guy who was there was hassling me to get my console chipped and I just couldn't get over the nerve of the guy. People who rip of this type of industry will only have themselves to blame if it went belly up. Something I feel people who play illegal games don't understand.

Hmm it's a sticky issue. The black and white answer is that pirating is bad... you can't afford something you don't buy it. However for some reason here and elsewhere pirating games is more frowned upon that pirating CDs, which though not discussed here is more widely accepted.

I appreciate the games I play because I buy them so I want to get my money's worth out of them. A good example of this is I have borrowed Bioshock from a friend, while I look after it because it belongs to someone else, I don't have the 'urge' to get to the end or get it 'completed'.
