Pirate games, anyone feel the same?

Second hand games and 'borrowed' games have already been paid for and the company who have made the games will have received their cut.

You don't pay VAT on a car multiple times do you.

Actually you do

Assuming you are a VAT registered car dealer then you pay VAT on only the profit element of the sale eg. you buy for £500 and sell for £594 then you would pay the VAT element of £94 profit to our good friends at hmrc so you would pay over £14

This is completely irrelevant however :D

Almost back on topic is swapping games or buying second hand game worse or as bad as piracy as this deprives the industry of much needed revenue

For the record I have never owned a chipped console or pirated console game but did used to download ever single PC game as soon as it was cracked even though i probably only ever tried about 1 in ten of them

maybe, but maybe thats why u didnt buy the game because it wasnt good enough, or it simply didnt interest you when you played it.

copied game = if you dont like it you bin it
bought game = you stick it out to make it worth the cash before trying to get rid...

i probably only buy 4-5 games a year but i only buy the best and usually end up playing them for a long time.

apart from this year i felt like a splurge bought UT and Orange Box for PC. played them both 1nce and since i formatted i havent re-installed...

not sure how widescale it was but i had a friend who owned a dreamcast which he bought lots and lots of pirated games for. He loved the dreamcast yet he has himself to blame for its downfall

edit: i personally have never pirated a console game but i have downloaded several pc games i would never buy otherwise all legit

I feel similarly to the OP. If I borrow a game from a friend, it usually just sits on my desk for a while and I play it maybe once or twice. If I buy a game myself I normally play it to death.

If its a good game i personally don't mind paying - although i'd rarely go out and buy a new release for £40 - id wait till the price came down a bit.

But if you are a VAT registered car dealer then you will claim the VAT back from the purchase :p

I happily download Dreamcast games until I find them to buy - I don't see that as being morally wrong - I guess it could be classed as illegal. Same with roms on the megadrive. I love both consoles to bits.

ROMs feel the same as not buying the game. I tend to play them a lot less and/or use the memory cheats to save games etc.

Funnily enough I don't actually own a Playstation but I've recently bought the NTSC versions of Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears, Vandal Hearts, Tales of Destiny and The Legend of Dragoon, which cost me about £130 total.
I could have downloaded them from the net if I wanted to but I'm the sort of person who prefers to have something on a shelf even when I don't need the discs.

I guess it could be classed as illegal.
It is classed as illegal :p

I see your point though. It hardly seems wrong for some old games that are hard to come by. If you actually cannot buy the game, then the companies involved aren't be losing out. Even if you could find a second hand copy, they still wouldn't be gaining anything.

But companies still aren't exactly happy with people doing this, because in theory they could re-release that game on another platform and start making money from it again. But if loads of people already have an illegal ROM of it then some of those people won't buy the re-release.

ill buy a game if its worth buying, simple as that really. all games on my consoles are legit, and i have god knows how many games on steam (over 50)

Anyone feel that unless you buy a game with your hard earned cash, you dont dedicate the same time to it?

Not really, when I used to download 360 games (before XBL bannage) I only downloaded games I was interested in and I don't think them being bought would have made any difference if I'm honest.

Another good plus point there: It's nice to have the actual discs on the shelf!
Well when I had my games I used a disc wallet, more convenient anyway.
If I buy a game myself I normally play it to death.
One could argue the game can't be very good if you have to do that just because you paid money for it.

I`ve got a chipped 360, and while it seemed like a good idea to get it at the time, now I`m not so sure. I rarely play my pirated games coz I feel slightly guilty about it. Also, with the horrendous unreliability of the 360, every time I turn it on I feel I`m one step closer to the Ring O` Death. Only in my case I wont be able to RMA it, not ever. Oh and no Xbox Live either. Then again, maybe I should just buy a shed load of games dirt cheap, play them to death and if the console breaks just get another. I do feel slightly guilty though and I think its weird that I dont seem to enjoy the pirate games as much as the full price ones.

no, in this case you would not :p
i was answering an earlier comment about paying VAT more than once
i was talking about used cars where you pay VAT only on the profit
The same second hand scheme is used in other second hand businesses eg jewellers ;)

How do people feel about sharing PSN id's or Steam account details to allow mates to download games you have bought - do you consider this to be as bad as downloading and burning a pirated game and playing it?

Surely borrowing is technically no better though?

None of the developers or those involved with Bioshock/Assasin's Creed will get any of your money, yet you'll get to play through their games as much as you'd like. Isn't that just the same as pirating?

The same could apply to buying second hand really (and I remember a debate over it not that long ago on here). I'd have to agree with SiD. People seem to horribly up-in-arms over downloading games over the net, but will look the other way when various other methods are used.

you sure the video shops can lend you the videos without having to pay the copyright owners anything?

I'm quite sure that some of your rental money goes towards the copyright otherwise rental companies would simply cease to exist or would be stamped on by the copyright holders.

EDIT: My mistake I thought you were talking about renting not borrowing.

Apologies.

Who has ever been offered a book to read but rather went and bought it themselves?

I have actually as I wanted to read it again. But most times I end up giving my books away to charity. Slightly OT but there you go.

I have a chipped Xbox 360 and some "ahem" illegal games but out of the 5 or so I only really play one PGR4 which I have not bought the original version. Should my console get banned I'll buy another console but to be honest I wouldn't know where to start to get it back to original state and won't mess around trying either.

I will buy games as I'm rich enough to afford them.

Actually I was thinking about selling my box and getting arcade version anyway.
