Ok, scrap the 300-800mm. This is the lens I want;

The Sigma 120-300mm or 300mm F2.8 can be found for around £800 2nd hand, add a 2x convertor and a monopod and you've got yourself an awesome lens for under £1k.

Anyway - the 100-400 is great, want to buy mine :D

So what kind of prices do these kind of lenses go for?

Done a quick google and found that telescopical lenses go for anything from 400ish? Am i right?

Would a 100-300mm get you good shots of the sky? How about an 18-55mm? Hhow good would that be for sky shots, i.e. just to catch the moon and stars etc while overlooking a ciry maybe?. :D

Any of Canons big primes, 300mm through to 600mm (soon to be an 800mm) go from between £3k and £6k,

The bonkers "experimental" lenses are all well over £10k, the canon 1200mm was over £90k

they're not generally the kind of thing you can just buy, the only real users of them are the media and specialists, over 800mm isn't that useful anyway as once you start shooting such distances there is that much air between you and the subject that it has a very negative effect on the image, you think about shooting that sort of focal length in the middle of summer, when the air is full of haze, glare, dust, flies etc.. you're far better off spending less and getting closer to the subject.

Could i get help with this too please, did a quick edit :)

Thanks,

Talking of minimum focusing distance, the 200-500mm f2.8 has one listed as 150cm which seems pretty damn good if that all the way up to 500mm. Whack the converter on and you would have a seriously oversized macro lens. :D

LOL, good luck getting the bugs to stay still while you approach them with that thing :D
