Has MS really put in a bid for Google for $45 Billion!

If MS isn't innovative enough a competitor will take advantage of that. Firefox is a great example of this.

Come off it. Firefox is a superior product given away free and still only has 15% of the market. There is no point competing with any application that MS decides to puts in windows, which is why they shouldn't be allowed to put anything they want in.

Maybe people want an integrated system out of the box. What about Apple and it's end to end closed platform? Apple have a great system becuase they have control over it. Why shouldn't MS have the same luxury?

Because Microsoft have a monopoly in desktop operating systems, the same way Google have a monopoly in the search engine market.

I agree, it applies elsewhere so why not computers? You don't buy a car from a dealer and then ask to have an Audi computer put into a BMW car do you (yeah I know its a crappy anology)?

I choose not to buy microsoft, let them do what they want.

You can still run FireFox and other applications on OS X :p. Microsoft will never have the luxury of a closed-system as they don't have control of the hardware!

I agree, we are here to post as a techie community and we are interested in this stuff. On the other hand my mum would be mortified is she had to find and download her own browser or mp3 player.

Well in most civilised countries, including the US, spamming is illegal. Many spammers rely on anonymity to protect them against prosecution, however I don't think Google could manage that.

Spam is not the correct word, more like targeted advertising. Google could change its ToS to say by using the service you give them permission to send you such things and there would be nothing you can do about it

Because their stuff is pants. Simple really.

Google is God. Just bown down in worship damn it! :D :p

Have to agree there, I think the story of how the two creators made it as part of a post grad project and are now worth billions each. Quite amazing really.

I'm pretty sure that would be illegal under UK law as well - you must be able to opt out of receiving information.

Well you see that's why i said change there ToS could you opt of the mails then you opt out of our service

My point is there is massive amounts of bad things they could do that was just one of them, thought of quickly to make a point. Google are in this to make money not to make people happy.

Then it's really easy to download an alternative, this has always been the case. At the end of the day, the Yahoo! aquisition will benefit most users, and for the people who want to stay clear, they can.

Microsoft's online presence is all over the place anyway, Live this Live that, what the chuff is it aiming for?! At least Google seem to have some relatively clear strategies of where they want to head. Microsoft taking over Yahoo is going to be a real mess imo.

Doesn't matter if they change their ToS, they'd still be acting illegally (in the UK at least). I thought we were talking about a hypothetical situation where Google had a M$-like monopoly in "web-services" anyway? In which case opting out of the service altogether wouldn't be an option.

I agree it's good to be paranoid but imo you can only really judge a company by its past actions not by its potential actions, which is why I'd be prepared to give Google a bit of leeway with their monopoly but not Microsoft.
