Thinking of buying a 360

Its its a waste having an Xbox360 and a Blu Ray player?

Wouldn't say so. I have the 360 with the HD-DVD player and a PS3, it makes me happy as i can watch films like casino Royale and Transformers, 300 etc in Hi defr glory. Also as a dvd player the PS3 seems one hell of a lot betteras well, not sure if i'm doing something wrong but my 360 will not upscale DVD's meaning that for some the video in in a box in the centre of the screen, meaning that i may as well be watching on a 20 in tv rather than a 32" widescreen, not sure if this is something i can change but it doesn't seem to want to upscale through the VGA cable.

Exactly my point :)

A collegue is going to lend me his PS3 to try out, first thing will be a trip to blockbusters for a Blu Ray film

The Xbox will send native signals from a DVD with a component cable, the TV will scale it to full size. But indeed VGA and HDMI are the way to get the XBox to upscale, Ive just bought a VGA cable for mine, but havent tried it out yet.

Something wrong there, it should upscale fine over VGA or HDMI. Have you tried changing the picture settings during playback?

Before you purchase, remember that the XBOX isn't the most reliable piece of hardware in the world and it's very noisey.

That said, the games catalogue is excellent but I think the PS3 will catch up.

I currently own a ps3 which i love to play but the lack of titles really annoy me and also the limited choice of online games. started thinking about getting a 360 for those awesome exclusive titles like halo etc. just wonderd whether it would be worth it or just stick to ps3/pc gaming and wait for better titles.

I have both, but being that the 360 is so noisy and for the fact that it pumps out more heat than a bonfire, any retail game that comes out on both formats FIFA08 as an example, i'll always go with the PS3 ver... The Live Arcade is I fire up my 360 for mostly nowadays.

Hope this helps ..

I'm sorry but as it has come up again I will spout my usual thing.

The Xbox 360 isn't that damn loud. I always wonder if people either sit and play games with the 360 taped to their head or if they just have the sound on mute. When playing a game, with the exception of loading screens when there might be little to no sound, I CANNOT hear it. It never even crossed my mind to think "wow, that is noisy" purely because I don't hear it. I certainly do not see it as a reason to not get one.

Heh I agree, it's not THAT loud but some people do seem to take offence at the noise. Also my PS3 pumps out way more heat than my 360, by a long way.

It's reading messages in forums such as this from people like you that have sent me off on a mission to find a 'quiet' 360... I don't believe that you are that deaf, that you can't hear it, or that delusional that you don't believe it's actually making noise, therefore under that assumption, you must have a quiet XBOX 360... My problem is that I have now had four, all different internal drives, different manufacturing dates etc,, and all four ... or was it five ???? THAT HAVE ALL BEEN beyond loud... It's the constant DVD spin noise that aggravates the beep out of me... I sit a fair whack away from the unit and unless I have the vol at a considerable level, it pollutes all in game sounds and detracts from my overall enjoyment of the thing.. This is for ALL retail games.. Live games do not use the drive therefore omit an acceptable level of noise....

Thats good the cooling system is doing the job. Both my 360's are noisy but it's worse on certain games. PGR4 is almost unbearable. I dont know how people manage in places they cant pump the sound right up.

Its the loudest piece of electrical equipment I have, even working as a media centre with no drive running its loud. Probably as i have it on the floor under the TV though as my TV unit would close the thing right up.

Its annoying late at night as I have to have the sound that notch or two louder for games like COD4 online, doesnt help add atmosphere in films either as there is always some background noise.

Fair enough.

But i still don't understand it.

I have only ever watched one film on my 360, and that was 300 which I rented as the HD version was cheap over Xmas. Again, the 360 noise didn't even get noticed.

I just cannot understand the issue

I can feel mine spin up and im sat on a bean bag about 2 metres away from it!

It's loud for a DVD player, not really a problem as a console though

I watch tonnes of films, TV shows on my 360. I listen to music, play games and I have never had to raise the volume to drown out the console. The console is also on my desk about half a meter from me.

Mine sounds like it's about to take off.

I like to listen to things loud any ways, with my sound system it isn't a problem, but the xbox isn't quiet.

Wait. I recently aquired a 360 purely to be ready for the release GTA4 and started having a look through the "HUGE AMAZING OMFG BACK CATALOGUE" of games as claimed by some people on here and its quite pathetic, out of the lot i saw 2 games i wanted to play...so i'm renting them.

All the highly rated Xbox games are on PC...and better. :\

Half of them probably don't appeal to you just by looking at the names. Try playing them.

If the games don't appeal to you that doesn't mean they don't to others. More fool you for buying the console if you don't like the games.

With a PC as good as a yours I wouldn't bother.

I've barely used my 360, pretty much all the games I wanted on the 360 have come out on the PC and are better for it.

Paying for online play is outrageous really.

Halo 3 was rubbish, only got about halfway through before getting bored.

And as said above, they're pretty noisey, not too bad for gaming but for DVD playing and video streaming its pretty annoying.

With Mass Effect coming to PC that sealed the fate of my 360.

took a trip in my local game shop after work and bought the xbox elite, mass effect, gears of war and extra controller with forza 2 and viva pinta  just setting it up now, thanks for the great feedback guys. next on my list is dead rising but couldnt find it in my local stores :(
