ps3 sells a million in the uk, faster than the ps2.....and the 360

I like this mock up :D

They will never even get close to re-couping what the developement costs have been for Xbox1 and 2. Not to mention buying exclusives. The life of the 360 has been vastly shortened by backing the wrong camp, not installing a Harddrive in all machines, HDD price and going for an installed dvd player.

From a business point of view it's just throwing more money down the drain.
I'm fairly certain they want their consoles under every TV for more than just games. MS are really pushing for DLC when it comes to TV and Films etc and I'm sure their business model for future releases features this aspect quite heavily.

If I was a shareholder I would be advising against it wouldn't you? Instead of thinking what you want think whats probably right.

They had a headstart.
They have had a year of the best games known to a console.
They have paid big money for exclusives.
Halo3
Online play from day one thats awesome.

Yet still they can't beat a playstation brand that launched with practically nothing to offer and a blu-ray gamble.

Then you factor in the returns costs for 3 years. I've sent back 5. How much profit was there on that £279? Factor in 10 UPS trips, 5 repairs.

These are all very good points.

I would bet a sizeable sum, however, that we will be seeing another console from Microsoft.

Look at how bad sony are with competition, now imagine what they'd do without MS hounding them for a slice of the market *shudder*

Sony are in debt, massively in debt, so at least Microsoft are in a better position than Sony.

Fact is Microsoft are pushing more and more towards the home media with Vista and other projects, a console is just one way of getting the brand into the home.

While Stringer has had some success, he hasn't cut costs as hoped, and growth in flat-screen televisions is more about industry developments than progress at Sony. The PlayStation alone won't change much and its movie business is all about Spider-Man. Another sequel, anyone? No, thanks.

Sony could easily not make another Playstation and just try to make as much money from the PS2 and PS3 brand. Even talk of Sony (phones/Playstation brand) being bought by apple.

So if they want one under every TV why did they screw up so badly with not having wireless, not including a HD format drive and charging what can only be described as rip off prices per gig of storage.

Or even the ability to upgrade the HDD yourself. Thats facility and cost alone means I'd never use one as part of my media center under the TV.

120gig hardrive which lets face it wouldn't even cut it for HD films and storage for the price of two 500gig drives.

Because they got it wrong. They want to dominate the games console market (I'm sure it was Big Bill Gates who said that) but then they make huge mistakes which have cost them dearly imo.

They will learn from these mistakes and the next itteration will be an even stronger contender for Sony. The problem though is that Sony will have learnt from their over arrogant mistakes too - should be a good battle next time round.

well done to sony. Imho this is the best console wars yet because its so close each company is trying to out do the compatition with better features and games.

A bit off topic but what ever happened to phil harrison i havent heard anything from him in ages. which is probably a good thing i guess

Yep, and tbh neither sony or MS will be in very strong positions next gen whether it be because of market position, reputation or finance/backing issues.

I am sure the ps3 has a long life in it yet, going on how long ps1 was for sale and ps2 still is selling.

Thats exactly my thinking, 5 years from now or even longer the Ps3 will be less than £100 and people will be buying them in droves as Blu ray players for the kids bedrooms with games thrown in.

Where as the 360 will be talked about like the dreamcast, great machine shame it never did better. Anyone have one that still works ;)

Blu Ray is the major reason this outsold the X360 to reach a million. Also the fact it was delayed so much here meant great initial release time sales.

The Ps3 problems at the start was 3 fold.

1. Lack of Good Games wth no AAA release
2. Lack of Blu Ray Films (yet exciting new technology)
3. High price that was hard to justify because of the above

2008 will be a Blu Ray year, you only have to look at the release schedule for both the Games and Movies. Then you have the whole HD-DVD is dying issue and thiers more exciting things going to happen this year for the PS3 platform too, Home, continued improved features via firmware and the TV recording EPG device.

I think we can expect the new Microsoft console by late 09.
Microsoft have achieved what they set out to do this round, but the platform will still have great software sales.

Have they really though? Serious question, does anyone have official figures on how sales of the 360 compare to the xbox?

Just wondering if MS have actually managed to increase their market at all? As of may 2006 MS had sold 24Million xboxes. Does anyone think they are going to beat that by Christmas 2009 with the 360? If they do, it wont be by much. If anything the announcement of a new xbox (which would need to come early '09 for a christmas '09 release) would slow sales down to a crawl.

Its not just sales numbers its sales to the competition that matter to them. Im talking about their percieved brand reputation. Thier software sales are excellent, compare the sales say of Fifa on X360 to PS3, GTA will be more interesting though. Live has proved to be a big success overall, including finacially and amongst most gamers it seems popular for them. The system still has imo its largest growth period to come as the price will continue to drop the games catalouge improves and the population or age groups/target customers keeps increasing.

Microsoft have moved to a different schedule their no longer playing catch up, their market leaders. As PS3 becomes stronger over the next year or so "playing catch up" by such time the 3rd gen Xbox will be out and once again give Microsoft that "next gen" hardware advantage.

Currently the xbox 360 is at <17 million and selling 100-140K a week.

What matters to them is convertine people away from the PlayStation brand and over to the xbox brand, which i don't think they have done very well. Sure they may have a bit more brand recognition, but their main objective was to take people away from the PS brand, which they haven't done.
They have not increased their userbase which is a problem, and is what they will be looking at when it comes time to make a new xbox.

Currently the xbox 360 is at <17 million and selling 100-140K a week.

Not going to increase their userbase over the original xbox sbstantially in a year and a halfs time are they? Also consider how many of them where 2nd xbox's due to breakages. I think you could assume at least 2 million are people buying a 2nd machine.

As i edited they, Microsoft are current market leaders, see software sales and revenue from online services thats the difference getting their console out first was meant to make and it has.

Its nothing to do with past sales of previous gen, as you me or probably even them cant put a figure on the amount sold by such a date.

Your also forgettting that a console sells its most when it reaches approx £100 and the X360 is in a much stronger position in its life cycle now than the original Xbox was so i dont see why it wont continue to sell. Microsoft can afford to sell the X360 a lot cheaper than the PS3 maintaining thataffordable or always lower selling cost as it now costs a lot less to manufacture.

i think xbox1 worldwide sales after 4yrs was over 22 million units so i wouldn't class MS grabbing more of the market share from the others till after this period. If anything its Nintendo that will grab more than the market share and will surpass the lifetime sales of the Nintendo gamecube by tomorrow (believe it or not, lol), 2008. Through February 9, 2008 Wii has sold 21.490 million consoles, while Gamecube had sold 21.515** million consoles Worldwide in its lifespan

I am sure Nintendo will be glad to know that :p

It has everything to do with past gen, they want to increase their market share, they can only do that if they increase over their last gen, or their last gen continues to sell well, neither of which they have done yet.

The xbox 360 is currently available for half the price of the PS3, but the PS3 is now outselling it.
