Looks like im going to London for an interview on Monday. :D Its a good job (In terms of what I want to do) at what seems a very good company. Im going to do plenty of swatting up until then. Going out on Saturday to have my hair cut, buy a new suit etc. The only potential downpoint to this job is hours/pay.

One thing I was wondering though; Is it rude to ask if the company helps cover some of the travel expenses to the interview (going to be close to £200 by the time im finished)? And if not, how would you approach the subject?:)

First off, congrats!

Secondly, I've never heard of a company (unless it's travelling to another country) offering to pay for travelling expenses for the interview. Why would they pay for you if they might not employ you? :)

Good luck dude!

I've never had a full time job let alone actively looked for one, yet I've seen travel expenses offered many times. I don't however have any idea how you'd begin to go about discussing it appropriately MK!

You could just ask is there is any compensation offered towards the reasonable expenses incurred in attending the interview. I'm sure you won't be the first to ask.

I've only ever been offered money when asked back for a second interview, most companies will interview a lot of people in the initial stages so it's not possible to pay out to everyone.

Best of luck!

I had the same kind of query, although with my interview tomorrow in london, i was tempted to ask whether they helped with commuting costs if i got the job, but i think this'd scare them away into choosing someone who actually lived in london :(

Company I work for will pay expenses for travel to a graduate job interview (at least they did when I had my interview), though this was made clear at prior to the interview.

Yeah, quoted for the truth, they usually ask you to bring along your receipts etc as proof. Microsoft reimbursed me when i had an interview there.

Details on the job please- sounds interesting to know what you did and aim to do :)

I would certainly ask them in a polite manner if you get the job :)

LogicaCMG do this. Maybe because the offices where they tend to interview peeps are a bit out of the way but *shrug*

Wouldn't the company think that if travel is an issue you wouldn't be a good candidate?

good luck!

I bloody hope its a photography related job sir.

Thanks everyone. After my excitement of yesterday, the reality and nerves are starting to kick in. Im sure i'll be fine at the interview (Over the last few years, my confidance and belief in my own abilities and skills have dramatically gone up which should help). But the idea of moving to London on my own, moving away from my parents and girlfriend, finding a place to live, money issues etc are all starting to worry me. Suppose i'll just have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

Books on the other foot tomorrow though :D

Sorry, but what do you mean by this?

Its just the travel to the interview thats an issue. If I get the job i'll be relocating to London.

The job is stores technician in a very large photography studio. The job is the exactly the sort of thing I want to do (The technical side of the photography industry), the company looks huge with lots of potential for future development. the only potential problem is that the hours were listed as 'weekend cover and weekday shifts'. Now I don't mind working slightly unusual hours, but the description didn't made it clear how many hours a week it was in total. As long as its enough hours to give me enough money to live then i'll be happy.

Hell no, you will blow any chances of a job 100%

Good luck with the interview :)

This is rubbish :) It is quite acceptable to politely ask what their travelling expenses policy for 1st and 2nd interviews is. They'll have been asked this many times before and will either pay in full, pay in part or pay nothing. You will certainly not offend anyone or give the wrong impression providing you ask the appropriate question in the appropriate tone.

Best of luck.

every job interview I have been on has offered travel expenses.

I've never had my travelling expenses paid for when I've gone to interviews. Although I was told that if I manage to get a second interview, they will for my travel but I never got to that stage :p

Congratulations.

You should ask for travel expenses.

I went to an interview once which involved lots of candidates being at the same place at the same time, and before they had chosen the successful candidate, I asked if they would pay for my hotel the night before. They said of course they would, and sent me a cheque shortly after.

I got offered the job. I always wondered if having the nouse to ask for the money affected their decision on me.

Mine paid. Work at a bank in the wharf.

Yep the companies I had interviews with a couple of months back all offered travel expenses upto £100 automatically but would have to discuss it with you should it be higher than that amount. Good luck :)
