My car just got wheel clamped!!!

There is no reason to take the car away straight away is there, your telling me you could not have left the car in the garage another 48hrs.

Also if you was to have an accident with no tax i can guarantee that you insurance would try wiggle there way out of any cost which you may pass onto them.

Its your own fault and IMO its a good law, i bet you wont let it happen again, it also stops people who are TAX dogers driving in uninsured/untaxed cars.

You need to get a insurance certificate in order to get road tax, you can't get one instantly over the computer!

Where was the car when it was clamped? That is your only possible get out clause (IE if it was on your drive).
If it was on the road you're screwed as you must have it taxed if it's on the road.

Out of interest, if this car was in the OP's drive (whether he has one or not) and it was without a tax disc, I'm assuming the clamping could not have been done.

However, it's clearly got to the driveway without a tax disc on display...

Edit - apologies as this is a poorly worded post - it's a hypothetical question, not a quip at any previous posts.

What I meant was, I have tesco car insurance and I would have to wait for the certificate to come through the post!

OK, so you wait until you have your insurance documents, or you tax your car over the phone. Wait for your tax to come through then drive the car.

Whats the problem?

Making it compulsary for them to sell cars with tax!

Why?

Do you want them to pay for your insurance and MOT too?

However, it's clearly got to the driveway without a tax disc on display...

Though not necessarily driven there :)

i had to wait to collect my car for exactly this reason. It was untaxed on the forecourt

i did a deal whereby i wanted 6 months tax ( i part ex'd my car with 6 months on) on the car when i bought it. I bought the car, and brought in my insurance and stuff, and they took my insurance certificate and got 6 months tax. I came and collected the car a couple of days later valeted serviced etc.. and with 6 months tax.

I managed to get my new car taxed at the post office without a new insurance certificate. Showed them my old certifcate (explained that I had updated the insurance and was waiting for the new certificate to come through) and also showed them the new registered keeper slip and explained the situation. After consulting with her manager the lady in the PO gave me a shiny new tax disc.

Do feel for you though.

You can do this?

why should they pay the tax ? its a tax on you, not them.

Think it depends on who you get at the post office but it is possible if you explain the situation to them.

Bought the car and drove it home before realising it wasn't taxed :o Quickly nipped to the PO who sorted me out.

it does. Cow at my local post office wouldnt take my insurance documentation as proof. I had the schedule of insurance, the receipt, the insurace cover note etc.. but because none of it said the word "certificate" they wouldnt take it. It even had the receipt thanking me for paying it, with the policy number, next renewal date etc.. but she still wouldnt take it !

and AA wanted £50 for a new certificate the robbing *******s
