Oh brother where will it end

And that did work well after all? Nearly everyday whilst i wait at the bus stop someone stands near me and smokes and whilst im out in town loads of people walk about and smoke. We're hardly not being affected anymore.

Yes, you are hardly being effected. Don't like the smell? Just move away and get over it. Health implications? Don't be silly.

Wow. Just...wow.

What?

You're standing in the general area of a smoker. The amount of smoke entering your lungs would incredibly low so yes, you are being silly. I can understand barmaids and what not, they're in a contained environment for long periods of time. You're just being petty.

You might be surprised that wandering round Oxford is the roughly the same as smoking 60 a day (source).

Oh dear, we obviously have an addict here.

I get the bus every single day and usually wait about 20-40mins depending on traffic. The amount of smokers around is a lot where i live, so i am getting a lot of second hand smoke that i shouldn't be getting. Its still dangerous even if its a low amount you know...

Agreed, why do people think it's OK to smoke in busy public areas? I don't want to smell and inhale your second hand ciggerette smoke.

Because it's perfectly legal and they're well within their rights to light up outside, regardless of how heavily populated it is! I don't smoke myself, but I'll be damned if I won't stand up for people's rights to have the freedom to do so.

Why arrive for the bus half an hour early?

Why not just go stand a few feet away or up wind of the smokers?

It really isn't a money making exercise, the cost is being used as a deterrent!

If people didn't smoke in the first place then the costs for the NHS would be HUGELY lower as all the people that walk in with diseases caused by smoking would disappear. Therefore if smoking was banned they wouldn't tax elsewhere.

I think it's a good idea as I despise smoking anyway, I just wanted to clear it up for all those whinging about it being a "money making" idea. If people didn't smoke the goverment wouldn't have generate the revenue to treat them all.

No **** Sherlock. This may come as a shock but you do realise nicotine is physically addictive?

I have a hard time believing you take in "a lot" of second-hand smoke standing out in the open area. The cars passing you probably do more harm to your lungs. It's pretty obvious you're just being petty :)

Hey you, don't bring your common sense into this.

The costs incurred by drinking are greater then smoking (I'll grab a source if requested). Shall we start handing out permits for that?

College = Unstable timetable and the fact that buses dont always run on time.

Very congested around the stop, i can stand away from them, but it still annoying that i need to move away from a public area where it is illegal to smoke.

Nice job at reading my last few posts Poirot.

EDIT: There probably isn't any point in me arguing with these addicts, nothing i can say will make them change their filthy ways so i may as well just stop in this thread.

But i really hope this license thing goes through.

Since when has it been illegal to smoke in public in Ireland? I thought it only applied to enclosed areas.

Come again?

You're right, very silly to argue a point when you're wrong. Ta-ra.

A bus stop is a public place you know.

Im not wrong, its just pointless to try and reason with someone who is scummy and cries over people who disagree with their lifestyle.

Oh dear. Do you always go on the offensive when you're wrong? Nasty trait there mate, sort it out.

It will never happen. I forsee someone taking the to the european court of human rights and it all going down hill from there. Plus, wouldnt the goverment end up loosing shed loads of money in taxes after people start buying from criminal gangs who arent gonna pass on the duty?

i hope the idea goes through, i'd also like to see similar for alcohol ('ll get on to this in a minute).

this will help prevent underage smoking, it'll make my job far easier (work on a till/kiosk so often have to ask I.D. for cigs etc, to the usual cries of "what the **** you on about 'mate' i'm 22" also, the less people smoking that foul weed the better, some of the smells make me want to vomit.

this would also work for alcohol as well, as well as making it better for me (as above) it would also go some way to preventing alcoholics obtaining copious amounts liquer and generally piddling off the rest of the general public, it would also go some way to preventing underage drinking.

as far as i'm concerned both are drugs destroying our society. we've proven we can't do moderation, so lets get rid of the lot is my opinion
