So I've had the PS3 a couple of days now...............

For anyone waiting for them to be released seperately, I just read this.

http://adultgamingenthusiasts.com/b...ilable-again-from-psm3-magazine-issue-98.aspx

yes thats the magazine that is out now, I already read that when hunting for the triggers online, anyway I picked up another PSM3 magazine today for a backup set of triggers just in case, I've read they will eventually be available as a retail product via Gioteck's website here http://www.gioteck.com/ (when it's up and running that is).

Trolling response? Get real.

If you really want me to regurgitate all the reasons that have already been posted in this thread (as well as others) then I will do so..

Firstly, it feels cheep. Really cheap. Like a mouse that you can pick up for a fiver cheap. Apparently the DS3 has a much sturdier, better quality feel, which will be good but the Sixaxis really feels like a few pieces of cheap plastic poorly put together.

Then of course there's the godawful triggers. People say 'ps1 pads were OK', or 'well nothing's changed since the PS2 pad, and that was OK..', but they seem to fail to realise that neither of these pads had triggers.

A big downer for me personally is the deadzones. They are huge. Apparently this too has been rectified with the DS3, but as it is there are large areas in the middle of the analogue sticks which I find I have to compensate for, particularly when playing FPS games.

If the controller was fine, and the majority were happy with it, then magazines wouldn't be giving away cheap modifications that make the controller more usable.

It's a modified, outdated design that has been (in the case of the Sixaxis) poorly implemented. So yes, 'pap'.

Few, if any consoles have had their controller overhauled and replaced within the first year of release, such as is the case with the Sixaxis, so it can hardly be called a rip-roaring success.

The Dual Shock 3 improves on all of the above except for the triggers.

I'm still not sold on these trigger addons, I genuinely had no problem with the SA/DS3 triggers, and adding these is making me hold the pad differently, and will take some getting used to.

I guess they're great for those who don't like the current triggers, and they are well designed and fit nicely, so well done Gioteck.

Fourth finger (ring finger) on my right hand is hurting right now from an hour of Motorstorm. Not the one that pulls the trigger, the finger below, that wraps around the back and grips the pad. The angle it has to be at and the pressure it has to grip the pad with (when you're also pressing X with your thumb) would make a contortionist wince. It's due to the small size and lack of bulk of the pad, it doesn't fill your hands just by it's size so your fingers have to grip it. Maybe if you have small japanese-like hands it's not such an issue. Also if you use your index finger for the trigger instead of your middle fingers, it constantly wants to slip off.

Having said that my index finger hurts after using the 360 trigger for a couple of hours on Forza 2, plus as I've said already the shoulder buttons you often hit by accident and the d-pad is poor, but overall for me the 360 has the better pad. I'll happily admit the PS3 is superior in other areas though - better cooling (and therefore far less noise) and reliability, more storage on discs, free multplayer, built-in wireless etc.

You signify how poor these boards are getting, with inane and trolling responses. If the Six-Axis is 'pap' please tell everyone your reasoning as to say it?

He doesn't have to. Pretty much everyone who is being honest will say the same things. Some people knew straight away, some people needed the DS3 first, or some just used an Xbox360 pad. Either way, the Six-Axis is an utterly crap control pad.

Seriously dude it may be hard to take in but some people do GENIUNELY like the PS3 pad. Its a matter of opinion not what you believe is true must be true. Yea a lot of people may not like it but that doesnt mean everyone! We arent all the same you know! If it really was that shockingly bad I think the japanese billion dollar R&D department would have realized this by now. ITS A MATTER OF OPINION!

Some people may like it, but what is a FACT is that the Six-Axis is not a good controller, which is why Sony are having it replaced and magazines are releasing trigger adaptors.

The Japanese R&D department wouldn't do anything, Sony make everything around the asian market, including controller size, the problem is with manly sized westerners with proper sized hands, like me.

I dont have a problem with either the 360 or PS3 pad.

What i do have a problem with is developers removing the option for me to use the right stick to accelerate/brake.

Its only worked perfectly fine since like, FOREVER, can i have the option back now?

Well I have bigger hands than most people I know and I really don't have a problem with the pad. I prefer the DS3 for it's extra weight and build quality and I didn't have a problem with the triggers until I tried those add ons.

I take exception to the fact that you think anyone who likes the pad is not being truthfull or somehow decieving themselves.

We should start a "show us your PS3/360 controller grip" thread to see if there is anything in the theory about the way people holding the controller makes for comfort.

How do you hold your 360 pad? I still hold it like the old Xbox pad, So use my index fingers for both the LB and RB and the LT and RT buttons.

Now in saying that, I feel I need to over stretch my index fingers to get to the lb and rb buttons. when coming from the LT and RT buttons. Maybe that's because I'm holding the pad in the wrong position, Maybe I need to start and hold it so that my middle fingers cover the RT and LT buttons, and my index cover the LB and RB buttons. But when I do that, The pad no longer feel comfortable.

People love the 360 pad, But I feel there is a problem with the trigger positioning on the 360 pad for the way I feel comfortable holding the pad. That does not make it a fact the pad is badly designed, It just shows it's a fact I need to get used to holding it in a different way.

PS3 pad, I picked up and got the familiar feeling of a Sony console, and have never had a problem with positioning of any of the keys, I'll say the new revision of the pad is more comfortable, Which is always good. But it's hardly a fact that the older the controller is bad.

---

I feel this is similar to when the Xbox got its pad changed, the first pad that came out with the Xbox was a rather large, but when the pad changed to the newer pad, it felt much more comfortable due to slight changes, but that doesn't mean the first pad was bad, It just means it had room for improvement.

Take exception all you want, but you've just stated the DS3 is a better controller and that the trigger adapters are better. What I said is for some it takes the DS3 or Xbox360 controller to realise that the Six-Axis isn't a good controller.

You've just said as much.

I often wonder what i do right and others wrong (maybe) as i find the DS3 and sixaxis comfortable and never have a problem with it or get cramps. I dont actually grip the DS3 as such just support it in the base of my palm using my little finger and ring finger to rest on the bottom part of the controller. If i try to grip hold of the controller (feels strange) then it does put pressure on your hands and doesnt feel comfortable but that seems just wrong and i cant see why you would need to.

One thing I don't like about the 360 pad, and I was talking to another forum member last night about it who agrees is, why is the left stick placed higher than the right? Is that supposed to be some kind of ergonomically friendly feature, a bit like MS's Natural Keyboards?

Thats one thing I hate about the 360 controller, they should be placed symmetrically like the PS pads, I don't have a mutant thumb.

But I'm sure the masses here love the stick being higher on the left for some reason, it really all is about personal taste.

Depends on the game, some games require the shoulder buttons used in unison, but for the majority of time I use my index fingers for both.

I use the triggers with the end of my index fingers and use RB and LB using the middle joints in my index fingers. Allows usage of both really easily whilst keeping a comfortable grip at all times. This doesn't work too well for FPS games though, but it's the method I'll use for Sports and Racing games.

I have pretty big hands and they do dwarf the Six-Axis so the 360 pad is a lot more comfortable, plus the grips on the controller are wider so it fills out my hand.

I'm the same, I don't grip the pad, Never have with those sorts of pads, that goes back to NES and master System, They just hover on my little fingers. :D

I was talking to someone about this last night, can't remember who, but it's common sense (no offense :p).
The upper left and upper right of the pads are the most comfortable areas on the pad and are the natural positions for the thumbs on ANY pad, on the Xbox360 pad without moving your thumbs they should rest on the lower right of the joystick and over X and A on the face buttons. This is the natural position of the thumbs.

Now years ago the old Analogue, then Dual Shock and later Dual Shock 2 controllers were fine because the vast majority of games all utilised a combination of face buttons and directional-pad, not joysticks. The natural position of both the D-Pad and Face Buttons were therefore brilliant and worked superb on all games that used these.

Microsoft however swapped the joystick to the 'natural position' of the controller and as most games use only the left analogue stick and face buttons this is very comfortable. The D-Pad isn't used in many games at all bar occasional use as perhaps a weapon select or inventory selection, so having that in the lower section of the pad has no real negative effect.

As a result of this, the majority of people would say the Xbox360 pad is better for First Person games or Racing games, something that I see commonly said on here and I agree with it. The PS3 pad is more popular for Fighting games, the reason being the majority of all gamers use a D-Pad rather than analogue stick for these (as controllers analogue sticks are totally different to arcade sticks).

This isn't a new argument, it was a common complaint regarding the previous generation of consoles where the PS2 controller (Dual Shock 2) was regularly classed as poor for FPS games and the Xbox controller (Original or S-Controller) were excellent for FPS games and racing games.

As games have progressed from predominantly digital to predominantly analogue Microsoft targetted their controller to the new, predominantly analogue method of gaming, Sony however are using a 13 year old design which was excellent for digital. As a result the PS2 and especially PS3 controllers (as almost all games now are analogue) are found wanting for FPS games and as FPS is the most popular genre going it's become more apparent.
