Toshiba calling it quits on HD-DVD

Naa a large porn company already have a few releases out, apparantly.lol

Good job really coz sony would have probably made the same mistake twice.

Does it? I thought the porn industry went HD-DVD only?

from the Inquirer

The answer is that it hasn't. Once you get past the sensationalist headlines, there's more to it. Big-time porn studio Vivid has announced its first Blu-ray porn movie, so there's obviously a leak somewhere in the Blu-ray condom. Even the Blu-ray disc Association has reacted quickly by saying there is no ban against adult movie content.

It's true that Sony doesn't care for porn on its devices. It was unhappy when porn started arriving on the UMD disc format for the PSP and from certain quotes by porn makers, Sony is not actually being that helpful with Blu-ray. It's not blocking them but, at the same time, it's not exactly pointing them in the direction of Blu-ray disc manufacturers that can help them out. Many are having to find their own production sources

You can say a lot of things about Sony but stupid isn't one of them. Well, most of the time anyway. There is no way that Sony can ignore the boost that porn can give the Blu-ray format. There are probably some older Sony execs that still have Betamax-related nightmares involving being chased by giant VHS video cassettes with enormous breasts.

The fact that many porn studios have already opted for HD DVD is fact not lost on the consumer electronics giant. Also, it's not just about Sony. Blu-ray is a team effort, so to speak, and like any orgy everyone wants to get their rocks off. The other Blu-ray partners are well aware of the power of porn. It's a $12.6bn market in the US alone and, of that, over $4bn comes from DVD rentals and sales. Morals aside, it's just too big (or is that ‘engorged'?) to ignore. Porn might be dodgy but it sells and both format camps know that it could be the Viagra they need to pull ahead in this ridiculous format war.

Sony has to protect its Disney partnership with BR, thats why they have their hands tied in regards to pron (Disney has a agreement where BR fabrication plant they use can not be used to duplicate pron discs)

I wonder how long Universal and Paramount will keep on producing hd-dvd only

That partnership will be less crucial once HD-DVD is out of the picture, then they can tell Disney to like it or lump it and start pressing 'Jenny boffs the Soccer Team 6' to their heart's content.
Disney will have to toe the line, because it's either that or lose out on the HD market entirely.

So basically because a store in america stops selling it that means worldwide bluray wins. Funny how one american store can supposodly impact things globally..

Well Wal*mart and Sam's Club are pretty huge in the retail market (number 1 perhaps?) and Blu-ray is already way ahead in Japan. That means only Europe could have changed the tide.

Netflix, Best Buy & Walmart all dropped HD DVD last week...

I dissagree, Joe public don't really bother about such things as storage space etc they just want to buy into the next big thing. All the PS3's sold having BD player built in definately made a big impact on BD sales as there were not as many standalone BD players sold as HD-DVD players yet the BD discs still outsold HD-DVD discs by a significant margin.

Agreed, Blueray was helped by PS3 significantly. Additionally, joe public thinks the name "Blueray" is the next generation of format. I remember my section manager said in a party that he's looking to buy the next generation of DVD technology called Blueray and other managers agreed.

Ahh, didn't know Vivid had gone BR. At least it was a good company.

I personally prefer the releases on HD-DVD to those on BR, thinking of getting a cheapo HD-DVD to pick them up, but I may wait for them to appear on BR, how long do you think it will take?

True but high definition has been a buzz word for the last few years, certainly a hell of a lot more than blu-ray has. You'd think people would clue into hd-dvd more than blu-ray. Im thinking more studios signed upto blu-ray becuase they expected ps3 sales to be better than the supposed 100+ million ps2 has sold.

HD-DVD was a horrible name. Damaged from the upscaling HD SDDVD players that were playing on the name. With Blu-ray you knew it was a totally different technology :)

It's strange really the timing of this, they just spent a load of money a couple of weeks ago to put an advertisement on during the Super Bowl, surely they didn't just come to the conclusion a couple of weeks later it was time to stop production, so why did they bother with the advert?

I agree, I've always felt the differentiation in terms of names helped push the technology, in being so different Blu-Ray became very much a buzzword.

Because the advert had been in production long before it was shown? You could spend hours making up reasons why.. its irrelevant though.

I love the difference between privatised organisations and public sector organisations. "Its all gone **** up.. pull the plug", compared to "its all gone **** up.. throw more taxpayer money at it!"
