Huge Let Downs

HL2 and BF2 were and still are some of my favorite games of all time! HL2 plus its episodes are just as good, if not better than HL and its mods were.

I'm with you on a couple, but SupCom and HL2  Fair enough if they were a let down to you, but they're two of my favorite games of all time!

HL2 with it's advanced problem solving AI... which was entirely scripted and not advanced at all. Far too much reliance on the mavity gun as a gimick and some of the levels just dragged on and on and on...

Nice tech demo tbh.

BF2 - Desert Combat with a buggier engine. Played online twice and couldnt see the point in upgrading from DC to BF2.

Supreme Commander just didn't grab me. Was hoping that it would be a new C&C - sadly it was a new drinks coaster.

Give me your machine - it's clearly wasted!

Nope. :D Currently re-enjoying Company of Heroes and Vampire: Bloodlines. :D

portal, sooo much hype from people i knew and forums, played it, lets in disbelief of how seriously bad it was

Kind of preaching to the converted. as its unlikely anyone put off gaming for good will be in the gaming forums... but anyway.

Crysis - that proved to me that modern gaming has become all about looks with no emphasis on game play or story... I played it for about 2 hours, got bored, and haven't played it since.

"Here, have a game you wont be able to play properly for 2 years, but dont worry, by the time that comes all the sado graphics fanatics will have told you the storyline, and you wont want to play it for the 'fun' of it, because its dull..."

I suppose youd have much rather had a bloomfest of graphical glory shoved in your face, with a side order of droll story and sterile gameplay.

Portal was an extrememly different, original (shh, i know it took the concept from an old game, but its not like its an overused gameplay technique), whitty, humorous and FUN game that sparked up most people to realise that some game designers know how to deviate away from the 'shoot prettier and prettier things with the same-but-different-name weapons to save human kind from destruction in slightly-different-but-equally-as-catastrophic ways' plot that all other games appear to be!

If you don't like Portal, your playing games for all the wrong reasons!

Has to be Crysis and Fifa 08 for me, I thought crysis was way overhyped and Fifa08 was a huge let down, I had such high hopes for Fifa but I guess EA want to show their "next gen" graphics on consoles.

Has to be another vote for Crysis, after 5 minutes i found myself playing the game purely because everyone else said it was great, hasnt been on or will be on since. PES2008 was a waist of my money and time aswell, game play was hacky, lag issues was unforgivable and the game just felt wrong.
Kane and Lynch also seemd a llittle bit of a let down to me, it wasnt that its wasnt good i just expected more from it.

On a brighter side portal had to be the most origanel game of the year and as mentiond, apart from the expected shortness of the game it was a fresh and ingrosing game that i felt was a great success.
Also COD4 gets my vote for game of the year and is in stark contrast to Crysis, great game play and superb visuals make it a top choice, coupled with a great single player mode that uses a brilliant story line to carry itself. The fact that the multiplayer mode is just as good and the game is very very scalable on almost any machine makes it a instant hit and the game i think crysis was hyped to be!

I'd like to say Bioshock, as it's essentially Doom3 with Art Deco and magic. Sorry, plasmids. But sadly I can't because it's merely one of a long list of games that leave me underwhelmed - most of them in fact:

Half Life (yes, you read that right)
Half Life 2
Deus Ex (and that)
Doom 3 (and yes, I get that it's Doom with modern graphics (it even has a couple of identical levels). But it's also Doom with no fun)
Quake 4
Crysis
NWN
NWN2
Baldur's Gate
Icewind Dale
Arcanum
Gothic 2
Gothic 3
Hellgate: London
STALKER (and what's with the pretentious capitals)
FEAR (ditto)
Fable
The Witcher (although it's slowly improving - right up until you suddenly hit a buffer in the game which reminds you that it's only pretending to be open)
Unreal2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 3

and that's just the hyped stuff.

And they're capitalised for a reason (read: acronyms).

Master of Orion 3, dear god that was a horrific game :( Moo2 was amazing, one of the top games for me, when Moo3 was anounced I got really excited and was looking forward to another top quality strategy game with much prettier interface.

They completely and utterly screwed it up :(

Out of all the people who posted here i wonder how many have been in pc gaming since the late 90s? If we think back it was the dawn of quality fps and RTS games; Quake, DukeNukem, C&C, Civ...etc. Everything now is just a facelift of each genre. Simply put - nothing is new and revolutionary as it used to be, the golden age of PC gaming has gone. Maybe this is why so many feel let down by latest generation of games.

I'm hoping Spore and GTA IV wont be a let down. If they are then something is really going wrong for the gaming industry!

Half Life
Doom 3 (wouldnt be so bad if u didnt have to rely on that torch every minute)
I would also say HL2 but havent played the full game(the demo was bad enough)
Cant remember if i said earlier in the thread but SOF:Payback
GTA San Andreas(didnt like the whole street gang storyline)

Actually technically the are backronyms: someone thought up the name, then tried to work out what they could make it stand for - "Stalker" for instance is taken from the name of the Tarkovsky film (in turn taken from the English translation of the original Strugatsky brothers book) that the idea is pinched from. Hence the plonking full names. And thus my point.

Edit: and Inquisitor beat me to it!

Obviously hard to believe, but I like Morrowind. And Oblivion. I've been a fan of Diablo2 for years; I liked the original Doom and Doom2. I played Dungeon Keeper for a while, and DK2 was OK, just not quite as good in the SP game. Painkiller was a badly-underestimated game: it's what Doom 3 should have been and wasn't. Currently I'm playing Titan Quest a lot - the first D2 clone that really cuts it - although still not quite there. I never quite finished Sacred, the other one which mostly worked. I think VampireTM: Bloodlines is a great game too.

In the past I've also played right through (a rare event, as most games (like those above) bore me fairly quickly):

Unreal
Serious Sam
Max Payne
Severence
CoD 2
Quake2
Dark Messiah of M&M.
AvP2 (all three campaigns)

But add to my over-rated list:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Blank & White

If there's any sort of pattern it is:

Gameplay over looks
The original is best - that's in terms of the type of game, rather than 1 is better than 2 is better than 3 etc - D2 is better than Diablo for instance. That said, every incarnation of Unreal Tournament has been worse than the previous one. Bit by bit it has turned into Q3A
Give me entertainment, and stop taking it so seriously (stand up Doom 3)

Im starting to notice a trend...

All the games people were most diapointed in were ones that were advertised as having "UBER AMAZING AWSOME NEW VISUALS"....

I hope game developers are reading this...
