Toshiba calling it quits on HD-DVD

Sorry, I didn't mean it to say Fox owns the Star Wars IP, that belongs to LucasFilm. What I should have wrote is along the lines of Fox has always been the distributor of Star Wars. I don't see that changing.

Ah ok, I suppose he could change it for whoever gives him most cash :D

Personally I hope there is never a HD format star wars original trilogy. I like the way it looks. Naturally there will be one though. Some classics I just think should be left alone.

I think they've already done it. When they went back and redigitised all the masters to make the DVD version, I'm sure they did it at 1080p so they were ready for a HD release.

All I am saying is that I have spent enough on the 360, so could justify £100 for a HD drive.... whereas now I will need to get a Blu ray player (PS3) for £300+ to watch HD movies.

I am not made of money, nor want to spend more cash on a console I won't use. That is why the optional extra of the HD drive was perfect for me.

Does that make more sense?

wonder how much truth in this

Microsoft dumping stock of Xbox 360 HD DVD drive in UK - end is near?

We have received a tip from a trusted source (who wishes not to be named) in the UK games industry that Microsoft distributors have been told by MS to try and dump stock of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD attachment into the trade channels at the low price of £49.95 plus VAT. This provides a huge indication that MS is planning to drop the drive all together due to a lack of sales in the UK region and who knows where else

Makes perfect sense to me. I would hold on for a BD add on for the 360 - I personally think they will release one within the next 3 months.

They both would have anyway as they are distributed by Blu-ray exclusive studios, though Lucas has final say I think on Star Wars so I guess he could have chosen to release them on HD-DVD for some reason.

Lucas has say whether Star Wars and Indiana Jones are released at all and on what format

LOTR was meant to be a special case for HD-DVD somehow - but Im not entirely sure why

Engadget is reporting this now -

Japanese publication Nikkei has it that Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida will be announcing the final discontinuation of HD DVD tomorrow, as well as halted sales of hardware and media by March (as in days from now). Apparently Toshiba will pull its units from retail shelves, but has no intention to give burned early adopters any refunds (no kidding?); it sounds like the ceasefire will include the bare PC drives as well, so those hoping to keep using HD DVD as a personal data storage medium probably won't have much luck. Apparently the announcement will come alongside Toshiba's plans to build new semiconductor fabs, which we're sure they'll try to spin as an advancement that far overshadows the hill of beans (read: hundreds of millions) they've lost in the format war.

Cripes. I didn't expect them to remove the hardware!

lets wait for the official announcement then - but I wonder what media they can pull? All the discs are produced by external companies (although admittedly to tosh's specifications)

if this is the end for HD-DVD I will be sad as I have got a small but very nice collection of HD-DVD's including blade runner collectors edition, transformers, 300, matrix ultimate and a few others.

I just hope that blu ray will be able to incorporate some of the features that hd-dvd has done so well such as selecting scenes while the movie is playing. the pip commentary that is used the network options for downloadable content. Not sure if br does any of these yet or at least it didn't when I last saw a br disk.

what would be nice but i know will never happen is the studios should offer an exchange program for those of us who have purchased hd-dvd's for the equivalent br disk.

If the Daily maiil is anything to go by - there are huge articles in the daily papers saying that hd-dvd is dead - p3 also and a pretty unmissable article ( if the name actually means anything of course)

Whether this is accurate or not doesnt really matter, if it gets into the heads of jp then its unlikely many will buy any toshiba units

Blu-Ray has the ability to scene select whilst playing. It has a pop up menu you can get some features from :)
PiP is coming IIRC. Downloadable content might be slightly different as not all Blu-Ray players have NIC's but i can't see why they can't offer it? Personally i don't care about that, but i know some folk do.

No surprise really, there was to many sources calling this over the weekend, Toshibas share price went UP when it was first announced. Hopefully this will mean Paramount and Universal will be going neutral for a while until HD DVD demands drops totally off. Should have my heroes and transformers on BD sooner than i thought, anyway it at least it will make Michael Bay happy :D
That Warner thing must have been large part of it, as before that it looked like it was going to drag on for another year at least, now people can just concentrate on the one format, and it will be clearer for the consumer on which to get. Its a bit of a shame for those who have just got a HD DVD player and disks but at least they can still use them and i expect HD DVD disk still to be made for a while.

True......feel sorry for the people who forked out for a top of the range Toshiba HD DVD player though. Great bits of kit with soon to be non existent support
Us xbox 360 HD DVD adopters should hopefully see a Blu Ray alternative

I did actually mean that as 2 different points! If there is no region coding then its likely a larger blackmarket will appear, pirate copies arent just limited to a country anymore so obviously the customer base increases internationally. The use of foreign cheap labour and production costs aswell as loopholes in more relaxed legislations means benefical results to anyone envolved within the market.

Importing DVDs was my second point as its obviously going to be a lot more cost effective to order DVDs from a cheap import site rather than to buy RRP from a UK retail store, this obviously has economical effects.

Your first point is completely mute thou. Region coding on the originals can be removed when pirated so they'd still be a blackmarket whether the originals were region coded or not.

Secondly the only economical effects would be on the corporations that continue to charge UK customers inflated prices on dvds and whom try to stop customers from importing software at lower costs from abroad.

Makes you think how smart Paramount where. They took their bribe off Toshiba, it only lasted about 6 months, and they will know just about every single disc they make will be sold.

Wonder if there was a clause in the deal saying if HD-DVD went under withing x amount of time, they would need to give money back.
