just arrived..my personal review of 3870x2

I know a certain retailers has been known to do that.

The used ones should be sent back to the factory and refurbished then repackage or the used ones should be posted in B grade with reduced price and clearly stated they have been used. Not on that IMO.

yeah - but that doesn't mean using it as well.

its not a try before you buy thing.

its a "if" you've ordered, and whillst waiting to have it delivered change your mind thing, not put it in your machine, see if you like it or not, then send back - whats the retailer supposed to do then ?

do you get to test the product if you bought it from a shop, ie COMPETITOR, local PC retailer etc ?

Hang on here, im not the one that writes the sale of goods act

The 7 day grace is simply because you have no way of seeing the product or having a demonstration in the shop before you buy.

I would advise you to take a little time out and read up on this*,

On a totally separate note.

For those of you who don't have the 8pin plug (myself included).

Try giving your PSU manufacturer an e-mail and ask them to see if they can send you a 6pin >> 8pin converter.

I recently e-mailed OCZ about one, 3 days later a 6-8pin converter arrives on my doorstep free of charge :) Can't beat customer service like that!

Worth a go :D

Thanks for the info Ill see if thermaltake will cough one up.

Good luck even gettting thermaltake to respond, ive fired off about 3 mails about how amazingly loud my 850 toughpower is weeks ago and no response back.

my 3870x2 feels hot to touch when in game, in windows its not too bad with 8.2 ati, does anyone know if there will be a third party cooler made for this card? like the arctic cooling accelero for my old x1900 theyre great.

i dont have the 8pin adapter but ati ccc should still show the temperature, are they gonna fix that with the next release?

yea my x2 is hot as well, the heat isnt really an issue although its warming up my south bridge chip :( The issue I see with third paty heatsinks is the weight, the x2 already is quite a heavy bit of kit and adding a larger cooler could damage the MB. The only way i can see the x2 being cool is either trough a more power dual slot cooler so 3 slots are used or using water to cool it.

To be honest being able to control the fan speed would be a good start considering when idle the fan barely moves.

yea the black retention clip is like a mini raditor and heats everything up in its area including the mobo, Im sorting it out by installing a PCI fan and move it to another PCIx16 slot where it cant interfere

clearly ati needs to up the fan speed ive been searching the net and have discovered the fan spins in most cases at no more than 40% of its top speed it probably just aint enough.

Fan gets loud once you turn it up.

Bung RivaTuner on and crank the fan upto 100%, its like a leafblower just fired up in your rig...

Cooling's part of the reason I haven't snapped one of these up yet. After being caught out with a reference 2900XT and then spending extra to fit a HR-03 to it I'm still on the look out for a non-reference X2 with a different cooling solution. Really like the look of the GeCube one, with the duo orb(?) cooler. Apart from it not venting out the back of the case.
