Generally, their current strategy is to sell the value to you, not to keep you with discounts. At least that was the management strategy when i was there.

I'll be off then lol

Surely, if SD image quality was important to you, you wouldve got a plasma instead? Or do you have other reasons for going for the Samsung LCD?

It doesnt surpise me at all that you wife felt the picture was crap.

My new Samsung 1080p7 upscaler arrived today so I'm going to have a look at that tonight so what the picture looks like!!

Now, this is something I am intrigued about. This "upscalar", tell me more about it please.

V+ Box is better because it has an HDMI output and upscales all SD programs to your HDTV's max resolution. Sky+ doesn't because its connected through SCART.

I think you get some decent HD stuff On Demand with V+ too, certainly Lost S1-3 are available for free.

I got the Samsung as I'd like to get a PS3 soon for blur ray plus it is rated as a very good TV....

Just to clarify, is this upscalar, a separate box that takes the place of the scalar of your TV or DVD player? Or is it just a conventional upscaling DVD player?

Just upscale of the dvd yes...

Just checked my firmware version and its the latest too.....bonus...

I recently upgraded to V+ from a regular Virgin box and am still amazed by the improved picture quality. Regular Virgin TV is just pixelated crap but the V+ box does an amazing job of upscaling the picture to a point where it's almost as good as HD on the higher bitrate channels.

There's also quite a bit of HD content on-demand which is worth watching. As has been mentioned, the EPG can be slow at times, but it's still useable.

If your considering getting skyHD, which in my opion is much better than any virgin box.

Hold off a few months until the Samsung and Pace boxes come out.

Sky is very expensive though £249 for the box £60 for the installation (although I work for a Sky partner so wouldn't pay this) then £10 extra per month there after... Is Sky HD via HDMI..?

Virgin pricing seems more accessible to me at this moment in time....

You do realise the PS3 upscales really well too? Much better than most upscaling DVD players. No region hack that I am aware of though. Unless you have a lot of imported films, you might have been wise just getting the PS3. You could then grab some BDs and be wowed by the difference when you watch your first 1080p movie :)

You got sucked in by marketing rubbish :( Hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Quality scalers cost several hundred quid.

This is what I thought he was using. My next step would be to buy a separate scalar, however, I'm thinking that my PC is doing as good a job. I honestly cant see, from a technological point of view, how a standalone scalar can beat a computer, at that job. I wouldnt want to spend £500-£1000 on an item that is unable to better the equipment I already have.

Just upscale of the dvd yes...

Gotcha.

Yes but the PS3 is £300+ and my 1080p7 was £50 delivered :)

And no I wasn't sucked in it only cost £12.00

I must say though the picture quality between my old dvd player and this is amazing it looks fantastic.... Going to watch all my fav DVD's again this weekend I think?

Just need a good 5.1 now :(

I've just gone V+ with the XL TV package + Sky Sports, phone M and BB L at £69pm.

I've read a lot about how people are impressed with the upscaling of the V+ box. Ill let you know next Monday (My install date) about my thoughts on the picture quality if you want?

You may want to try and haggle your price down a bit before the install. We're getting a very similar package, XL TV (inc. Sky Sports and Setanta) XL Phone and BB L plus an extra tv box for £55 (maybe £50, I can't quite remember, I think the multiroom added the extra fiver)

SD channels can look very good indeed through the V+ box, I'm very happy with mine, which I got at the start of Jan. Yes the channel changing can be a bit slow but from what I read it's down to the recording/pausing features.
